Description
From one of Germany’s benchmark dry-wine producers comes a rare, delicately sweet gem: the Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz Gewürztraminer Godramsteiner Münzberg Spätlese Bio 2023. Crafted only in suitable vintages, this certified organic Spätlese offers a beautifully poised expression of Gewürztraminer that is fragrant, refined, and impeccably balanced. Sourced from the renowned Münzberg site in the Pfalz, it marries classic varietal opulence with the purity and precision for which Rebholz is famous.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätlese shows a bright, shimmering straw-gold hue with youthful reflections that hint at its freshness and future potential. The nose is finely woven and expressive, opening with delicate rose petals and lychee, followed by notes of candied orange peel, subtle exotic fruit and a gentle touch of honey. Nothing feels heavy or perfumed; instead, the aromatics are lifted, detailed and elegant.
On the palate, the wine is silky and slightly viscous, with a luxurious texture that is immediately counterbalanced by a fine, animating acidity. The natural sweetness is beautifully integrated, giving a sensation of richness without ever tipping into cloying territory. Flavours of lychee, rosewater, citrus zest and light honey unfold in layers, carried by a long, precise finish that remains airy rather than opulent. Enjoyable now for its youthful vibrancy, this 2023 Spätlese also has the structure and acidity to develop additional complexity over the next 8–12 years, gaining deeper honeyed and spicy nuances with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for this wine come from the Godramsteiner Münzberg, a well-exposed site in the Pfalz characterized by nutrient-rich loess soils that lend both generosity of fruit and a fine, polished texture. Under certified organic cultivation, the vines are carefully tended to ensure low yields and optimal ripeness, with harvest carried out selectively by hand to capture only the healthiest, most aromatic berries at Spätlese ripeness. After a 24-hour maceration on the skins to gently extract aroma and structure, the must is fermented and matured in stainless steel. This reductive, temperature-controlled approach is a hallmark of the Rebholz style, preserving the varietal purity of Gewürztraminer and highlighting the clarity of the terroir without the influence of oak.
Food & Serving
This Gewürztraminer Spätlese is a natural partner for aromatic and subtly spicy cuisines—think Thai or Vietnamese dishes with chili, ginger and lemongrass, or lightly spiced Indian curries featuring poultry or shellfish. It also pairs beautifully with mature blue cheeses, foie gras, pâté, or fruit-based desserts such as apricot tart and citrus pavlova. Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 8–10 °C, to emphasize freshness while allowing the aromatic spectrum to fully unfold. Decanting is not necessary, but giving the wine a few minutes in the glass will help it open up and reveal further floral and exotic nuances.
Producer
Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz is one of the most respected estates in the Pfalz, long celebrated as a pioneer of uncompromisingly dry, terroir-driven wines. Founded in the late 19th century and named after the title “Ökonomierat” (an honorary designation for agricultural excellence), the estate has pursued a philosophy of authenticity and minimal intervention for generations. Today, Rebholz is certified organic and is regarded as a stylistic reference point for Riesling and Pinot varieties in southern Germany. While best known for its precise dry wines, the occasional production of noble sweet specialties like this Gewürztraminer Spätlese showcases the estate’s breadth of skill and its intimate understanding of the region’s finest vineyard sites, earning it consistent acclaim from critics and wine lovers alike.
