Description
Weingut Knipser’s Laumersheim Steinbuckel Spätburgunder Trocken 2021 is a refined German Pinot Noir from one of the Palatinate’s respected estates. Combining ripe red-fruit character with firm structure, fine tannins and carefully integrated French oak, it offers an elegant, age-worthy expression of Laumersheim terroir. The Knipser family has been making wine in the village since 1876 and was among the region’s early pioneers of premium bottled wine and red-wine production.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby-red in appearance, the wine opens with inviting aromas of raspberry and strawberry, complemented by subtle spice and a delicate oak influence. On the palate, it is taut, structured and elegant, with precise red-fruit flavours, fine-grained tannins and a refreshing, juicy core. The finish is long and persistent, with a pleasing balance between fruit, savoury spice and oak.
Thanks to its concentration, acidity, tannic structure and extended maturation in both barrel and bottle, this Spätburgunder can be enjoyed now but should develop further complexity over the next several years. Properly stored, it has the potential to mature gracefully for around 8–12 years from the vintage.
Production
The grapes come from the Steinbuckel vineyard in Laumersheim, in the northern Vorderpfalz, an area known for producing expressive and structured Pinot Noir. The fruit is fermented on its skins for approximately 10 days, without the use of whole bunches or stems, allowing for a focused, polished tannin profile. The wine is then matured for 24 months in new French oak barrels, followed by a further two years of bottle ageing before release. This patient élevage gives the wine both depth and a seamless integration of fruit, tannin and oak.
Food & Serving
A versatile partner for roasted duck, poultry with mushroom sauce, veal, pork tenderloin and herb-crusted lamb, it also works beautifully with earthy dishes such as wild mushroom risotto or truffle pasta. Serve lightly chilled at approximately 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential, but a 30–60 minute decant can help the wine open up, particularly when enjoyed in its youth.
Producer
Weingut Knipser is a family-owned estate based in Laumersheim and has been in operation since 1876. The winery farms approximately 75 hectares across Laumersheim, Großkarlbach and Dirmstein in the Vorderpfalz. Heinz Knipser began bottling the estate’s wines in 1948, while current owners Volker and Werner Knipser helped shape its modern identity from the mid-1980s by introducing barrique maturation, increasing the focus on red wines and planting both classic regional and international grape varieties. Today, the estate is widely regarded as one of the leading names in German red-wine production.
