Description
Weingut Knipser’s Laumersheim Kalkmergel Spätburgunder Trocken 2019 is a refined, dry German Pinot Noir shaped by the limestone-marl soils of Laumersheim. It combines ripe red-fruit character with savoury depth and subtle oak-inspired notes, reflecting the Knipser family’s long-standing commitment to high-quality red wine. The estate, founded in 1876, was among the early producers in the region to bottle its own wines.
Tasting Notes
The nose opens with elegant aromas of overripe raspberries, followed by ripe cherry and subtle savoury nuances reminiscent of raw meat and smoked ham. On the palate, it is full-bodied and generously textured, with concentrated red-fruit flavours balanced by earthy, smoky notes. Hints of cigar box and espresso powder add complexity and a lingering finish.
This is a structured Spätburgunder that is enjoyable now, particularly with a little air, while its fruit, depth and oak-derived complexity should allow it to develop further over the next several years when stored in suitable conditions.
Production
The wine comes from vineyards around Laumersheim in the northern Vorderpfalz, where limestone-marl soils contribute freshness, structure and mineral character. The available information does not specify the harvesting method or the exact vinification details for this vintage. Knipser has, however, been an early advocate of barrique maturation and has placed particular emphasis on red-wine production since the 1980s.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for pan-seared roast beef, venison and other game dishes, this Spätburgunder also suits hearty stews and richly flavoured braised meats. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential, but allowing the wine to breathe in a decanter for 30–60 minutes can help reveal its ripe fruit and savoury complexity.
Producer
Weingut Knipser has been a family-run estate in Laumersheim since 1876, with vineyards across Laumersheim, Großkarlbach and Dirmstein. Heinz Knipser began bottling the estate’s wines in 1948, making the winery one of the region’s early estate bottlers. Today, Volker and Werner Knipser continue the family tradition, having expanded the focus on red wines and introduced barrique ageing in the mid-1980s while working with both classic regional and international grape varieties.
