Description
Weingut Knipser’s 2020 Laumersheim Burgweg “Im Grossen Garten” is a refined German Spätburgunder with the poise and structure of a serious Pinot Noir. Delicate red-fruit character, mineral detail and lively acidity are complemented by extended maturation in French oak and bottle, reflecting the Knipser family’s pioneering role in elevating red-wine production in the Pfalz.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep, elegant ruby-red colour. Its nose combines delicate red berries with refined mineral notes and subtle nuances from the long maturation in French oak. On the palate, it is precise and complex, with vibrant acidity, fine-grained structure and a lingering finish. The balance between fruit, freshness and structure gives this Spätburgunder excellent cellaring potential; it can be enjoyed now with aeration or developed further over the next several years.
Production
The grapes come from the Laumersheim Burgweg vineyard in the northern Vorderpfalz, an area known for producing expressive and structured wines. The Spätburgunder grapes are fermented on their skins for 10 days, without whole clusters or stems, allowing the fruit and site character to remain clear and focused. The wine then matures for 24 months in new French oak barrels, followed by a further two years of bottle ageing before release.
Food & Serving
Its freshness and refined structure make this Spätburgunder an excellent match for roast duck, game birds, veal, mushroom dishes and richly flavoured vegetarian cuisine. Serve slightly cool, ideally at 14–16°C. Decanting for around 30–60 minutes is recommended when serving the wine young; older bottles should be handled gently and decanted only if necessary to remove sediment.
Producer
Weingut Knipser has been a family-owned estate in Laumersheim since 1876 and today farms approximately 75 hectares across Laumersheim, Großkarlbach and Dirmstein. Heinz Knipser was among the region’s early pioneers of estate bottling, beginning in 1948. Since the mid-1980s, Volker and Werner Knipser have helped shape the modern identity of the Pfalz by introducing barrique ageing, increasing the focus on red wines and combining classic regional varieties with international grapes. The estate is particularly recognised for its ambitious, structured and age-worthy Spätburgunder.
