Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Hundertgulden shows a pale lemon color with greenish highlights, signaling youth and freshness. At first, the nose is quite restrained and reductive, emphasizing its serious, tightly wound style. With a bit of air, aromas of wet stones, crushed chalk and flint begin to unfold, followed by delicate green fruit notes of lime, green apple and underripe pear, alongside subtle herbal and earthy nuances. On the palate, this Riesling is intensely mineral and sharply focused, almost sweeping across the tongue with its juiciness and drive. The high, finely etched acidity is powerful yet precise, creating a vibrant, mouthwatering tension. The fruit remains cool, understated and crystal-clear—think lime zest, green apple skin and a hint of white peach—wrapped in a pronounced limestone salinity and a slightly austere, stony backbone. Still very youthful, it has excellent aging potential; over the next 8–15 years it should gain complexity, soften its edges and reveal more depth of fruit and tertiary notes.

Production
The Hundertgulden vineyard in Rheinhessen has been coveted since the 14th century, reportedly changing hands for ‘hundreds of gold guilders’ due to its exceptional quality. Today it is renowned for having some of the most carbonate-rich, limestone-heavy soils in all of Germany, giving wines of striking minerality and precision. The Knewitz brothers farm their parcels with great care, favoring low yields and selective hand-harvesting to bring only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling grapes to the cellar. Vinification typically emphasizes a gentle pressing, cool and controlled fermentation (often in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak) and extended time on fine lees to build texture without masking the pure, stony character of the site. The result is an unadorned, terroir-driven Riesling where the limestone speaks clearly in the glass.

Food & Serving
This is a superb food wine that shines with refined, mineral-focused dishes. Pair it with oyster platters, ceviche, sashimi, grilled prawns or simply prepared white fish, as well as steamed mussels, scallops or sushi. It also works beautifully with goat’s cheese, fresh herbs, light poultry dishes and vegetable-based cuisine featuring asparagus, fennel or green apples. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 8–10 °C, to highlight its tension and minerality. A brief decant of 30–60 minutes, or generous swirling in the glass, is recommended in its youth to help the reductive, closed-in notes open and reveal the full aromatic spectrum.
