Description

Weingut Knewitz Riesling Appenheim Aus Ersten Lagen Bio 2023 is a precise, mineral-driven white that captures the limestone-rich character of Appenheim in Rheinhessen. Crafted from organically grown Riesling grapes sourced from top village sites, including the renowned Eselspfad, it balances tension and elegance in a distinctly cool, stony style. Partly matured in stainless steel and partly in large traditional oak (Stückfass), this Ortswein offers a remarkably authentic expression of its origin.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a pale lemon colour with green reflections, hinting at its youthful freshness and purity. The nose is initially tight and reductive, marked by pronounced stony and flinty notes, with nuances of wet rocks, struck flint, menthol and a cool, herbal lift. Fruit remains almost in the background at first, as the wine leads with its mineral core. With air, the wine gradually unfolds, revealing delicate yellow fruit – think ripe lemon, mirabelle and a touch of crisp pear – alongside vibrant citrus zest. On the palate it is linear, focused and energetic, driven by a vibrant, mouth-watering acidity and a firm, chalky mineral backbone. Subtle yellow stone fruit and fresh citrus are wrapped in a saline, almost smoky minerality. The finish is long and precise, showing fine, understated tannins, a hint of mint and a suggestion of preserved or salted lemon. While already thrilling in its youth, this Riesling has the structure and acidity to evolve beautifully over the next 5–7 years, gaining complexity and texture.

Production
The grapes for this wine come from some of the most limestone-rich sites around the village of Appenheim in the Welzbach Valley, including parcels in the Eselspfad vineyard. These south- to southwest-facing slopes are characterised by calcareous soils with a high chalk content, which naturally lend the wines tension, salinity and finesse. The vineyards are farmed organically (Bio), with careful canopy management and low yields to ensure concentration and purity of fruit. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, allowing strict selection of healthy, optimally ripe Riesling grapes. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and undergoes a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine is then aged partly in stainless-steel tanks to preserve freshness and precision, and partly in large traditional Stückfass, which adds texture and subtle complexity without overt oak influence, before being carefully blended and bottled with minimal intervention.

Food & Serving
This taut, mineral Riesling pairs brilliantly with nuanced, high-acidity dishes and delicately flavoured cuisine. Think oysters, ceviche, sashimi, steamed white fish with citrus and herbs, or seafood tartare. It is also excellent with goat’s cheese, sushi, light poultry dishes, spring vegetables, asparagus, and modern vegetarian plates featuring fennel, kohlrabi or root vegetables. Spiced but not overly hot Asian dishes – such as Vietnamese salads or lightly spiced Thai curries – also work well, as the wine’s acidity and mineral core cut through richness. Serve well chilled at around 8–10 °C. A short decanting or generous aeration in the glass is recommended in its youth to allow the reductive, flinty notes to open up and reveal the underlying fruit and complexity.

Producer
Weingut Knewitz is a dynamic, highly regarded family estate based in Appenheim in Rheinhessen, an area that has emerged as one of Germany’s most exciting cool-climate regions. Under the guidance of brothers Tobias and Björn Knewitz, the winery has gained a reputation for precision-crafted, terroir-driven wines, with a particular focus on Riesling and Burgundian varieties grown on limestone soils. Over the past decade, Knewitz has become one of the leading names in the northern Rheinhessen renaissance, frequently cited by critics and wine guides for its clarity of style and consistent quality. The estate’s commitment to organic viticulture, careful work in the vineyards and a minimalist approach in the cellar allows their wines – especially their Appenheim bottlings – to express the full potential and unique character of the Welzbach Valley’s chalky terroir.
