Description
Weingut Knewitz Chardonnay Aus dem Tal 2023 showcases the remarkable affinity between Chardonnay and the lean limestone soils of Rheinhessen. Crafted as the more approachable counterpart to the estate’s Réserve, it combines pronounced mineral character and lively freshness with subtle oak, making it an elegant, distinctive expression of German Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes
Bright and refined in the glass, this Chardonnay currently presents a restrained, purist profile. The nose is shaped by flinty, smoky notes alongside fresh nut butter, popcorn and a delicate touch of vanilla, while the fruit remains discreet in the background. On the palate, it is creamy yet focused, with a fine, almost savoury texture, crisp freshness and a stony mineral finish. The combination of subtle fruit, gentle nuttiness and well-integrated oak gives the wine considerable balance and depth.
Although already enjoyable, the 2023 vintage should gain further harmony and complexity with bottle age as the oak integrates and the mineral character develops. It can be approached now with air, or kept for several years in a cool cellar.
Production
The wine reflects Rheinhessen’s limestone-rich terroir, where lean, calcareous soils help preserve freshness and lend the Chardonnay its characteristic stony, flinty profile. It is matured in a combination of new and used barriques, with a deliberately restrained approach to yeast-derived aromas. This careful élevage allows the wine to develop a creamy texture, subtle nuttiness and refined oak character without overwhelming its mineral identity.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Its freshness and creamy texture make it an excellent partner for roast poultry, grilled or pan-fried fish, scallops, creamy pasta, risotto, and dishes featuring mushrooms or lightly toasted nuts. Decanting is not essential, but 20–30 minutes in a decanter or a generous Burgundy glass will help reveal the wine’s smoky, mineral and nutty nuances.
Producer
Weingut Knewitz is a respected Rheinhessen producer associated with precise, terroir-focused wines from the limestone landscapes around Appenheim. Under Tobias Knewitz, the estate has drawn attention for its elegant, mineral-driven Chardonnay, which combines Burgundian-inspired élevage with the distinctive freshness and stony character of its German origins.
