Description
Weingut Heiligenblut Silvaner Attila 2022 is the estate’s flagship expression of Silvaner – a refined, quietly complex white from one of the winery’s most treasured hillside parcels in Rheinhessen. Sourced from very old vines, some over 70 years of age, it captures the depth, tension and understated elegance that Silvaner can achieve in the right hands. Low natural yields, meticulous hand work in the vineyard and a minimal-intervention approach in the cellar make this a rare and characterful bottling for discerning white wine lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Silvaner Attila 2022 shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with a delicate greenish shimmer, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is finely etched and subtle rather than showy: classic green notes of hay, fresh-cut fennel, woodruff and crisp Granny Smith apple float above a gentle herbal core, with a touch of wet stone in the background.
On the palate, this wine is all about finesse and precision. A fine, playful acidity carries nuanced floral tones, a whisper of soft yellow fruit (think mirabelle and white peach) and a cool, stony minerality. The texture is silky and almost weightless, yet the wine fans out with impressive length, finishing on a dry, lean and delicately saline note. While it drinks beautifully now for its purity and vibrancy, the structure and mineral drive suggest it will evolve gracefully over the next 4–6 years, gaining more complexity and textural depth in bottle.
Production
The Silvaner Attila is drawn from a single, historic parcel on the Heiligen Blutberg in Rheinhessen, the oldest vineyard of Weingut Heiligenblut, with vines partially exceeding 70 years of age. These deep-rooted, old vines naturally produce very low yields, concentrating flavour and minerality in the small, healthy berries. All grapes are harvested by hand to ensure rigorous selection in the vineyard, then brought to the cellar where fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The wine is left un-fined and handled as gently as possible to preserve its natural character, with only a minimal addition of sulfur just before bottling, resulting in a pure, transparent expression of site, vintage and variety.
Food & Serving
This refined Silvaner is a natural partner for delicately flavoured, precise cuisine. Think spring vegetables, asparagus dishes, light fish preparations, ceviche, sushi, fresh goat cheese, fennel-based salads or simple roast chicken with herbs. Its fine acidity and subtle herbal notes also pair beautifully with lightly spiced vegetable dishes and modern, plant-focused menus. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C, to allow the aromatics and texture to open. A brief splash in a carafe or 15–20 minutes in the glass after pouring will help the wine unfold its floral and mineral nuances.
