Description
Weingut Heiligenblut Riesling Bonifatius 2021 is the estate’s flagship Riesling and a true rarity from the slopes of the Heiligen Blutberg in Rheinhessen. Sourced from a single parcel of old vines, some more than 65 years of age, this is a concentrated yet finely etched expression of Riesling at its most serious. With just 533 bottles produced in 2021, it is a collector-worthy white that marries history, legend, and meticulous craftsmanship in every glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Riesling Bonifatius shows a bright, pale lemon color with green reflections, hinting at both youth and freshness. The nose is complex and layered: Riesling‑typical notes of crisp apple and ripe red peach are joined by subtle exotic nuances—think a hint of passionfruit or pineapple—wrapped in delicate floral tones and a stony, mineral edge.
On the palate, this is a structured, concentrated wine with impressive depth and drive. The old vines and naturally low yields translate into dense fruit, a firm core, and a long, precise finish. Expect a vibrant interplay of juicy stone fruit, citrus zest, and cool, slate‑like minerality, supported by fresh but well‑integrated acidity. Still youthful, the 2021 has clear aging potential; with proper cellaring, it should develop additional complexity, more pronounced smoky-mineral tones, and honeyed nuances over the next 8–12 years.
Production
The Riesling Bonifatius is sourced from a single, privileged parcel on the Heiligen Blutberg in Rheinhessen, where old vines—some over 65 years old—dig deep into the soils, yielding naturally low quantities of intensely flavored grapes. All fruit is harvested by hand, allowing rigorous selection directly in the vineyard and ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are used. In the cellar, the must is fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, a slower, more nuanced process that captures the character of the site. The wine is bottled un-fined (ungeschönt), preserving texture, purity, and the full aromatic spectrum of this singular Riesling.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling that shines with refined dishes. It pairs beautifully with seafood such as scallops, poached turbot, or grilled prawns, and works equally well with sushi, sashimi, and delicate Asian-inspired cuisine where subtle spice meets freshness. It can also complement white meats like veal or poultry in light, citrus- or herb-based sauces, as well as goat cheese or semi-hard Alpine cheeses. Serve well chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 9–11 °C, to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can be beneficial in its youth, helping the wine to open up and reveal its full complexity.
Producer
Weingut Heiligenblut is a historic estate in Rheinhessen whose identity is closely linked to local legend and the figure of Saint Boniface. According to tradition, a chapel was built here at Boniface’s behest to commemorate Christians killed by Attila the Hun, and this story still shapes the winery’s labels and sense of place today. Over time, the estate has focused on expressing the nuances of its vineyards—particularly the Heiligen Blutberg—through careful, often low-intervention viticulture and winemaking. With tiny productions and a clear emphasis on old vines, hand harvesting, and spontaneous fermentation, Weingut Heiligenblut has earned a reputation among connoisseurs for characterful, terroir-driven Rieslings that stand out even in Germany’s highly competitive Riesling landscape.
