Weingut Hannes Sabathi’s Südsteiermark Chardonnay Gamlitz 2018 showcases the freshness, minerality and elegant structure of southern Styria. Grown on steep Opok slopes near the Slovenian border, it combines ripe fruit with subtle oak influence and a refined, creamy texture while retaining impressive vibrancy.

Tasting Notes
Bright and pale gold in appearance, this Chardonnay opens with aromas of ripe apple, citrus and delicate stone fruit, complemented by gentle wood notes and a clear mineral character. The palate is dry, fresh and structured, supported by lively acidity and a subtle creaminess that emerges on the finish. Its balance and mineral backbone allow it to develop further in bottle, while it is also drinking beautifully now.

Production
The vineyards lie around Gamlitz in the heart of the Südsteiermark DAC, where steeply sloping sites are characterised by Opok soils—a local marl formation that contributes mineral freshness and structure. The grapes are harvested from these hillside vineyards and fermented in stainless-steel tanks, with a portion vinified in wooden casks. The wine is then matured on its fine lees, partly in wood, adding complexity, texture and a restrained creaminess without compromising its freshness.

Food & Serving
Serve this Chardonnay lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. It is an excellent match for poultry, veal and fish served with creamy sauces, as well as grilled shellfish. Its freshness and mineral profile also complement refined vegetarian dishes. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help reveal its fruit, texture and subtle oak nuances.
