Weingut Hannes Sabathi’s Südsteiermark Alte Reben Sauvignon Blanc 2019 is a precise, terroir-driven expression of Austrian Sauvignon Blanc from the steep hills around Gamlitz. Made from old vines rooted in limestone-rich Opok soils, it combines mineral tension and cool-climate freshness with impressive depth, texture and cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes
The wine opens with a bright, pale golden appearance. Its layered bouquet reveals gooseberry, ripe citrus and white peach, complemented by subtle spicy and savoury nuances. On the palate, it is taut and mineral, with ripe, well-integrated acidity and a refined, textural mid-palate. The finish is long, focused and distinctly saline, leaving a clean impression of citrus and stone. With its structure and freshness, the 2019 vintage can continue to develop in bottle for several years, gaining further complexity while retaining its precision.

Production
The vineyards lie on steep slopes in Gamlitz, Südsteiermark, where elevated sites, cool nights and lean, limestone-rich Opok soils provide ideal conditions for structured, vibrant Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are carefully harvested at maturity to preserve both freshness and varietal character. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in large wooden casks and partly in stainless steel, followed by ageing on the fine lees. This combination builds texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s natural tension and avoiding dominant oak flavours.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. It is an excellent match for shellfish, ceviche and grilled fish, as well as refined vegetable dishes featuring fresh acidity, herbs or gentle spice. Decanting is not essential, but allowing the wine to breathe in a glass or carafe for 20–30 minutes can help reveal its full aromatic depth, especially when enjoyed young.
