Description
Weingut Giegerich Spätburgunder Pitztaler Berg 2021 is a finely crafted German Pinot Noir from the prized single vineyard “Pitztaler Berg” in Großwallstadt, Churfranken. Grown on low‑yielding French Pinot clones and aged in barrique following a Burgundian model, it delivers impressive depth, polish and regional character. This is a modern, terroir‑driven Franconian Spätburgunder that bridges classical Pinot elegance with the dark-fruited intensity Churfranken is becoming known for.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Pitztaler Berg shows a vibrant ruby to garnet core with a clear, bright rim, hinting at both youth and finesse. The nose is dark and expressive, with a generous mix of blackberries, wild berries and fully ripe cherries, underpinned by subtle notes of cocoa, fine spice and a touch of forest floor from the barrique aging.
On the palate, the wine is juicy and compact, with a dense core of dark fruit framed by fine, well-integrated tannins. The texture is silky yet structured, offering a precise balance between ripe berry and cherry flavors, delicate spice and a gently earthy undertone. A lively, well-accented acidity keeps everything fresh and focused, leading into a slightly herb-tinged, pleasantly dry finish. Enjoyable now for its vibrant fruit and charm, it also has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 5–7 years under good cellaring conditions.
Production
The Pitztaler Berg vineyard lies on the outskirts of a small forest in Großwallstadt, within the Churfranken area of Franken, where the soils are rich in weathered colored sandstone (Buntsandstein) covered by a substantial layer of loess and loam. This combination gives both finesse and depth to the Spätburgunder, allowing the vines to root deeply while retaining sufficient moisture and minerality. French Pinot Noir clones are planted here and carefully kept to low yields to concentrate aroma and structure. Harvesting is carried out by selective hand-picking, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. Vinification follows a Burgundian approach: gentle fermentation, followed by maturation in barrique barrels, allowing the wine to gain complexity, subtle oak spice and a refined, polished texture without overpowering the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is a versatile partner for refined yet comforting dishes such as roasted duck, crispy pork belly, veal schnitzel, or herb-crusted lamb. It also works beautifully with mushroom dishes, truffled pasta, game birds and semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic precision and silky structure. A short decanting of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more of its layered dark fruit and fine spice.
Producer
Weingut Giegerich is a family-run estate in Franken that has steadily built a reputation for precise, characterful wines rooted in their local terroirs, particularly within the Churfranken area. While Franken is historically known for its white wines, producers like Giegerich have been instrumental in showing the region’s strong potential for high-quality Spätburgunder from sandstone and loess-rich sites. By combining careful vineyard work, selective hand harvesting and thoughtful, often Burgundian-inspired cellar practices, the estate has become a respected name for expressive, site-driven Pinot Noir and other Franconian specialties.
