Description

Weingut Georg Breuer Riesling Pfaffenwies 2023 is a finely etched Rheingau Riesling that captures the steep-slope drama of its origin in a precise, mineral-driven style. Produced in very limited quantities, this bottling is sought after by enthusiasts who appreciate Riesling with both tension and elegance. The Pfaffenwies site has long been admired for its ability to yield wines of clarity and finesse, and the 2023 vintage continues that tradition with remarkable purity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Pfaffenwies shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, hinting at its youthful freshness and lively acidity. The nose is immediately expressive: lime zest, green apple and white peach lift from the glass, woven together with notes of wet stone, white flowers and a touch of herbal nuance. On the palate, this Riesling is precise and linear, with a bright, mouthwatering acidity that frames the fruit rather than overwhelming it. Citrus and stone-fruit flavors are layered with saline minerality and a subtle smokiness from the steep slate and quartzite soils, giving the wine impressive depth despite its airy feel. The finish is long, clean and slightly salty, suggesting excellent aging potential over the next 8–10 years, during which time the wine will gain additional complexity, honeyed notes and more pronounced tertiary aromas.

Production
The Pfaffenwies vineyard lies on steep, terraced slopes above the Rhine in the western Rheingau, where poor, stony soils of slate and quartzite, combined with excellent drainage and strong diurnal shifts, yield grapes of striking concentration and minerality. The 2023 harvest was carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy Riesling clusters made it to the cellar. In keeping with Georg Breuer’s philosophy of minimal intervention, the grapes were gently pressed, with spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts, typically in stainless steel and large traditional casks to preserve freshness and terroir expression. Extended contact on fine lees adds texture and complexity without sacrificing the wine’s signature precision.

Food & Serving
This Riesling is a superb partner for delicate and refined dishes: think oysters, grilled prawns, ceviche, sushi, or simple steamed white fish with citrus and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, fresh goat’s cheese, and vegetable-based dishes such as asparagus, fennel or seasonal salads. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C to highlight its vibrancy and aromatics. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up in its youth, revealing more floral and mineral nuances.

Producer
Weingut Georg Breuer, based in Rüdesheim am Rhein, is one of the Rheingau’s benchmark estates and a leading voice in the modern renaissance of dry German Riesling. Founded in the late 19th century, the estate gained international recognition under the visionary leadership of Bernhard Breuer, who championed terroir-driven, ageworthy Rieslings long before they became fashionable. Today, the family continues this legacy with an unwavering focus on meticulous vineyard work, low yields and sustainable practices, producing wines that are highly regarded for their precision, elegance and capacity to age. The Pfaffenwies bottling stands as a testament to the estate’s commitment to expressing the unique character of the Rheingau’s steep slate and quartzite slopes.
