Description

Weingut Georg Breuer Riesling Pfaffenwies 2022 is a precise, mineral-driven Rheingau Riesling from one of the estate’s most characterful steep-slope vineyards. This is a dry, terroir-focused wine that captures the cool, stony elegance of the upper Rhine Valley. Produced in small quantities, it’s a thoughtful choice for those who seek expressive, ageworthy Riesling rather than simple fruitiness.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Pfaffenwies shows a pale straw-yellow color with greenish reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is finely etched and detailed, with notes of lime zest, green apple, white peach and grapefruit, layered over flinty, slate-driven minerality and a touch of herbal lift—think lemon balm and fresh wild herbs. On the palate, the wine is dry, linear and tightly focused, with vibrant acidity and a pronounced saline, rocky impression that clearly reflects its steep, stone-laden origins. Citrus and orchard fruits are joined by hints of white flowers and a subtle smoky note, giving complexity without heaviness. The finish is long, clean and mouthwatering, with a lingering mineral tension that invites another sip. While already charming in its youthful precision, this Riesling has the structure and acidity to evolve beautifully over 6–10 years, gaining more depth, spice and tertiary complexity with time in the bottle.

Production
The Pfaffenwies vineyard lies on steep, terraced slopes near Lorch in the Rheingau, where vines cling to weathered slate and quartzite soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The cool, breezy microclimate and excellent drainage help produce grapes with high natural acidity and clear varietal expression. The Riesling for this cuvée is typically harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection of healthy fruit. In the cellar, Georg Breuer follows a minimally interventionist approach: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, often in a combination of stainless steel and large, old wooden casks, followed by extended time on the lees to add texture and complexity while preserving clarity and precision of fruit. The result is a wine that speaks more of place than of winemaking technique.

Food & Serving
This Pfaffenwies Riesling pairs exceptionally well with refined, subtly aromatic dishes that echo its freshness and minerality. Think freshwater fish (trout, pike-perch) with herb butter, sashimi and ceviche, steamed shellfish, or light poultry dishes with citrus and fresh herbs. It is also excellent alongside vegetable-focused cuisine—white asparagus, artichokes, or dishes with fennel, leeks and delicate Asian-inspired flavors. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally at 8–10 °C, to allow the aromas to open gradually. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine unfold its floral and mineral nuances, especially in its youth.

Producer
Weingut Georg Breuer is one of the benchmark estates of the Rheingau and a key name in the renaissance of top-quality dry German Rieslings. Founded in the late 19th century and shaped in the modern era by the visionary Bernhard Breuer, the estate has long championed terroir-driven, ageworthy Rieslings from steep, traditional vineyards along the Rhine. Today, the winery is run by Theresa Breuer, who has further refined the focus on sustainable viticulture, meticulous handwork in the vineyards and restrained, low-intervention winemaking. Georg Breuer’s single-vineyard bottlings, including Pfaffenwies, are widely respected for their precision, elegance and longevity, and the estate is considered a leading voice for the potential of dry Riesling in the Rheingau and beyond.
