Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Nonnenberg shows a pale lemon to light straw color with greenish highlights, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is pure and finely etched, offering aromas of white peach, lime zest, green apple and pear, layered with notes of crushed slate, wet stone, jasmine, subtle herbs and a delicate hint of smokiness. On the palate, this is dry, taut and focused, with a racy acidity that frames the fruit beautifully. Citrus and stone fruits – think lime, grapefruit and white nectarine – are supported by a salty, mineral core that reflects the quartzite- and slate-rich soils of Nonnenberg. The texture is elegant yet structured, with impressive length and a lingering, stony finish. While already enjoyable in its youth, the 2023 vintage has the backbone and concentration to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity, spice, and honeyed nuances with bottle age.

Production
Nonnenberg is Georg Breuer’s historic monopole in Rauenthal, a steep, south- to southwest-facing hillside in the Rheingau characterized by poor, stony soils of quartzite, slate and loess. This demanding terroir naturally limits yields and promotes small, intensely flavored Riesling berries. The grapes are hand-harvested in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection, often later in the season to capture full aromatic development while preserving acidity. In the cellar, fermentation typically proceeds spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, mostly in large old oak casks or stainless steel, at controlled temperatures. The wine is then left on its fine lees for an extended period, enhancing texture, complexity and stability, before being bottled with minimal intervention to preserve the vineyard’s distinct character.

This Nonnenberg Riesling is an exceptionally versatile food wine, shining alongside refined dishes such as oysters, scallops, grilled or poached white fish, sushi and sashimi, or delicately spiced Asian cuisine with ginger, citrus or lemongrass. It also pairs beautifully with roast chicken, veal, pork tenderloin, mild goat or soft cheeses, and vegetable-driven dishes with fennel, asparagus or fresh herbs. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at around 9–11°C, to allow the aromatics to unfold. In its youth, a brief decant of 30–60 minutes can help open the nose and soften the structure; as it gains age, decanting remains beneficial but should be gentle to preserve its finesse.
