Description

Weingut Georg Breuer Riesling Berg Rottland 2023 is a focused, dry Rheingau Riesling from one of Rüdesheim’s most renowned steep vineyards. It captures the tension between ripe fruit and vibrant acidity that has made Breuer a benchmark for serious, age‑worthy Riesling. This is a wine for drinkers who value precision, minerality and a true sense of place in their glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Berg Rottland 2023 shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with bright green reflections, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose opens with fragrant citrus—lime zest and lemon peel—layered over white peach, ripe apple and a hint of nectarine, supported by nuances of white flowers, crushed slate, wet stone and a subtle herbal lift. On the palate, the wine is dry, linear and tightly woven, with a finely etched acidity that gives shape and length. Flavors of juicy lime, green and yellow apple and stone fruits are interlaced with saline, smoky minerality and a gentle, almost spicy note often associated with this site. The texture is both elegant and firm, with a long, precise finish that lingers on citrus peel and stone. While already enjoyable in its youthful, zesty phase, this 2023 Berg Rottland has clear aging potential; it should gain complexity and soften its edges beautifully over 8–15 years, developing more honeyed, herbal and petrol nuances with time in bottle.

Production
Berg Rottland is a steep, sun‑drenched slope above Rüdesheim in the Rheingau, with stony, well‑drained soils composed of slate, quartzite and mixed loam that naturally limit yields and highlight mineral expression. The river Rhine below moderates temperatures, reflecting light and warmth onto the vines and promoting slow, even ripening. At Weingut Georg Breuer, the grapes for this bottling are typically harvested by hand in multiple passes, ensuring only optimally ripe, healthy fruit is selected from the often terraced parcels. In the cellar, fermentation generally proceeds with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and/or traditional large, neutral oak casks, at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatic purity. Extended time on the fine lees adds texture and depth without masking the vivid character of the vineyard, resulting in a dry Riesling that speaks clearly of its origin.

Food & Serving
This Berg Rottland Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, excelling with refined seafood dishes such as grilled sea bream, sashimi, ceviche or scallops, as well as with delicately prepared white meats like roasted chicken or veal in light sauces. It also complements Asian cuisine with aromatic but moderate spice—think sushi, Vietnamese summer rolls, or Thai dishes with lemongrass and ginger—alongside fresh goat cheese, soft-ripened cheeses and vegetable dishes such as asparagus, fennel or herb‑driven salads. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11 °C (48–52 °F), to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold. Young bottles benefit from a brief splash decant of 20–30 minutes, particularly in the first few years after release, to open up the nose and integrate the racy acidity.

Producer
Founded in the late 19th century and shaped decisively in the 20th century by Bernhard Breuer, Weingut Georg Breuer is one of the leading estates of the Rheingau and a vocal champion of dry, terroir‑driven Riesling. Based in Rüdesheim, the winery farms some of the region’s most prized steep vineyards, including Berg Rottland, Berg Schlossberg and Berg Roseneck, sites that have helped define the modern image of top‑flight Rheingau Riesling. Today, the estate continues under the stewardship of Theresa Breuer, who has further refined a philosophy centered on low yields, meticulous hand work in the vineyards, sustainable practices and minimal intervention in the cellar. Georg Breuer’s wines are regularly cited among the finest dry Rieslings in Germany, and the estate has played an important role in elevating the reputation of single‑vineyard Rheingau wines on the international stage.
