Description
Weingut Georg Breuer Riesling Berg Rottland 2022 is a single-vineyard dry Riesling from one of Rheingau’s most prized steep slopes above Rüdesheim. It captures the tension, depth and mineral precision that have made Georg Breuer a benchmark for serious, ageworthy Riesling. This cuvée is all about clarity and finesse rather than power, offering a refined expression of the Berg Rottland site in a vibrant, youthful vintage. Sourced from old vines on a classic Rheingau hillside, Berg Rottland stands out for its combination of ripe stone-fruit character, salty minerality and firm, linear structure. Long associated with top-quality dry wines, this historic vineyard was already documented in the Middle Ages as prime wine-growing land along the Rhine. In the hands of Georg Breuer, it has become a modern reference point for terroir-driven German Riesling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Berg Rottland shows a pale lemon to light straw color with green reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. Swirl the glass and you’ll notice a lively, almost crystalline brightness.
The nose is finely etched and precise: ripe orchard fruits such as yellow apple and white peach are layered with citrus zest, lime blossom and a delicate hint of white flowers. Underneath lies a distinct mineral core – think wet stone, crushed slate and a whisper of herbal notes like lemon balm. With air, subtle aromas of quince and a touch of smoky flint emerge, adding complexity without ever feeling heavy.
On the palate, this is dry, focused and elegantly structured. A vibrant backbone of acidity drives flavors of juicy peach, green apple, lime and grapefruit, wrapped in a finely salty, stony minerality that is typical of Rüdesheim’s steep slopes. The texture is sleek yet mouthcoating, with impressive length and a gentle phenolic grip that promises further development. The finish is long, precise and refreshing, leaving a lingering impression of citrus peel, stone fruit and saline spice.
While already approachable in its youth for those who enjoy vivid, energetic Rieslings, the 2022 Berg Rottland has clear aging potential. Over the next 8–15 years, it should gain in depth and complexity, developing notes of honey, dried herbs and petrol, while retaining that characteristic freshness and mineral line.
Production
Berg Rottland is a steep, south to southwest-facing vineyard above Rüdesheim, where Riesling vines root deep into stony soils of slate, quartzite and mixed loess, with the Rhine River below providing reflected light and moderating temperatures. This combination of poor, well-drained soils and a warm mesoclimate yields low but intensely flavored grapes with excellent natural acidity. At Georg Breuer, harvesting is done by hand in several selective passes through the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy clusters are picked. In line with the estate’s philosophy, fermentation typically relies on indigenous yeasts and proceeds slowly, often in a mix of stainless steel and large, neutral wooden casks, preserving purity while adding gentle textural nuance. Extended lees contact enhances mouthfeel and complexity, resulting in a dry Riesling that transparently expresses its origin rather than winemaking artifice.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, especially well suited to refined, subtly aromatic cuisine. Pair it with shellfish (oysters, scallops, langoustines), simply prepared white fish, sushi and sashimi, or classic German pairings like trout with herbs. It also shines with Asian dishes featuring ginger, lemongrass or light chili heat, as well as vegetable-focused plates such as asparagus, artichokes, or goat cheese salads. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold. Younger bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter or a gentle splash in a carafe to open the nose and soften the edges, especially if enjoyed within the first few years after release.
Producer
Weingut Georg Breuer, based in Rüdesheim am Rhein, is one of the most respected estates in the Rheingau and a leading name in dry German Riesling. Founded in the late 19th century, the estate truly came to international prominence in the late 20th century under Bernhard Breuer, who was instrumental in championing terroir-driven, dry styles at a time when sweeter wines dominated the image of German Riesling. Today, his daughter Theresa Breuer continues this legacy with a meticulous, quality-first approach in the vineyards and cellar, focusing on steep, historic sites such as Berg Schlossberg, Berg Rottland and Berg Roseneck. The winery’s commitment to low yields, careful handwork and minimal-intervention vinification has earned it a reputation as a benchmark producer in the Rheingau, with wines that are celebrated for their precision, longevity and sense of place.
