Description
Bottled in an impressive magnum, the 2021 Weingut Emrich-Schönleber Riesling Halenberg Großes Gewächs is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most revered sites. This is a wine for collectors and enthusiasts who value finesse over sheer power, showcasing the cool precision and depth that Halenberg is famous for. In the tradition of the estate’s greatest vintages, the 2021 is built for the long haul, combining understated aromatics with profound complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Halenberg GG Magnum shows a pale, shimmering lemon-yellow color with green reflections, hinting at its youth and vibrant acidity. The nose is initially restrained and finely etched rather than opulent: delicate herbal notes, crushed slate, and a subtle smoky, flinty reduction evoke wet stone and nasses Feuerstein, while citrus zest, white peach and a touch of green apple gradually unfold with air.
On the palate, this Riesling is taut, linear and deeply mineral, with an almost electric tension. Juicy citrus—grapefruit, lime and Meyer lemon—interplay with cool stone fruit and a savory, smoky nuance that is typical of Halenberg’s blue slate and quartzite soils. The texture is finely woven and elegantly dry, with great concentration carried by a precise, racy acidity. The finish is long, salty and mouthwatering, promising excellent aging potential. In magnum, the 2021 should evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining more aromatic breadth, spice and textural creaminess while retaining its mineral backbone.
Production
The Halenberg vineyard is a steep, south-facing cru with inclines of up to 70%, carved into stony soils dominated by blue slate and quartzite. This harsh, poor terroir forces the deeply rooted vines to work hard, resulting in naturally low yields of small, highly aromatic berries. Grapes for the Großes Gewächs are hand-harvested in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and perfect fruit selection, often at the first hint of noble ripeness while remaining firmly in the dry style. In the cellar, Emrich-Schönleber relies on a gentle, minimalist approach: slow pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and élevage on the fine lees, typically in a combination of stainless steel and large, neutral old barrels, to preserve the vineyard’s signature smokiness, herbal nuances and crystalline minerality without masking them with oak.
Food & Serving
This focused, mineral-driven Riesling is a superb partner for refined, nuanced cuisine. Think delicately prepared seafood—turbot, sole, scallops, sushi and sashimi—as well as fine shellfish like oysters and langoustines, where the wine’s saline grip and acidity echo the sea. It also shines with classic German dishes such as forelle blau, light veal dishes, or roasted poultry with herbs, and is an inspired match for aromatic yet not overly spicy Asian dishes. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics to build in the glass. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth, especially from magnum, to help the initially reserved bouquet open and reveal its full complexity.
Producer
Weingut Emrich-Schönleber is one of the leading estates of the Nahe and a reference point for dry German Riesling. Based in Monzingen, the family has been cultivating vines for generations, but it is in recent decades that the estate has risen to the very top of the VDP producers, thanks to meticulous vineyard work and an uncompromising focus on expressing terroir. Their grand cru sites, particularly Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen, are now widely recognized among Germany’s finest Riesling vineyards. Emrich-Schönleber’s Großes Gewächs wines regularly earn top scores from international critics and are highly sought after by collectors, cementing the estate’s reputation as a benchmark for precision, elegance and ageworthy dry Riesling from the Nahe.
