Description
Erdreich Bio 2021 from Weingut Bianka und Daniel Schmitt is a vivid, characterful orange wine that captures the pure, unadorned expression of Rheinhessen’s vineyards. Crafted from Gelber Muskateller and Scheurebe, it marries aromatic intensity with the structure and grip that only extended skin contact can bring. This cuvée showcases the Schmitts’ radical commitment to natural winemaking, proving that zero-addition wines can be both precise and beautifully drinkable.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Erdreich Bio 2021 shows a deep golden to light amber hue, a visual cue to its four weeks on the skins. The nose is surprisingly fruit-driven for a natural orange wine: ripe passion fruit, crunchy apple and sweet honeydew melon take the lead, layered with fresh cucumber, herbal nuances and a subtle note of black tea and dried flowers.
On the palate, the wine is lean, taut and completely dry, with a fine, tea-like tannic backbone that gives shape and length without feeling heavy. The fruit remains vibrant and lifted, supported by lively acidity and a delicate herbal spice that lingers on the finish. Its structure and natural acidity suggest a good aging potential over the next 3–6 years, during which the tannins should soften further and the savory, tea and herbal notes will gain complexity.
Production
Sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Rheinhessen, Erdreich Bio 2021 reflects a gently rolling landscape of loess, clay and limestone that gives both aromatic lift and a firm mineral line. Bianka and Daniel harvest by hand to ensure only healthy, perfectly ripe Gelber Muskateller and Scheurebe grapes make it to the cellar. The grapes undergo a four-week maceration on the skins, extracting color, aroma and gentle tannin, before the wine is pressed and aged in large neutral wooden casks. Throughout, the Schmitts work without fining, filtration or added sulfur, allowing spontaneous fermentation and long, unrushed élevage to shape the final character of the wine.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that shines alongside aromatic and textural dishes: think spiced Middle Eastern mezze, grilled vegetables with herbs, sushi and sashimi, lightly spiced Asian cuisine or soft washed-rind cheeses. It also works beautifully with roasted poultry, root vegetables and dishes featuring fresh herbs, citrus or ginger. Serve slightly cool, around 12–14°C (54–57°F), to let both the aromatics and structure show at their best. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes is recommended to open up the nose and soften the initial grip of the tannins.
