Description
Weingut Bastian Beny Sylvaner 2022 is a beautifully crafted expression of Rheinhessen’s most traditional white grape, brought back from its reputation as a simple workhorse to the fine-wine stage. Sourced from nearly 50-year-old vines and raised with a light, careful hand in the cellar, this dry white shows just how nuanced and characterful Sylvaner can be. Long aging in used wood and minimal intervention highlight both the grape’s purity and the quiet depth of its terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Sylvaner shows a clear, pale to medium straw-yellow color with subtle green reflections that hint at its freshness. The nose is delicate yet complex: fine blossom aromas lead the way, joined by notes of woodruff, meadow herbs, and a subtle yellow-fruit character reminiscent of mirabelle plum and quince. Beneath the fruit, a pronounced mineral edge already comes through, suggesting cool earth and damp stone.
On the palate, the wine is dry, finely textured, and precise, with a cool, linear structure and a mineral-driven backbone. The fruit remains understated—gentle yellow orchard fruit and a touch of citrus peel—while herbal and floral tones add lift and complexity. The long time in used wood lends a discreet creaminess and roundness without any overt oak flavor, allowing the loess-based minerality to shine. The finish is persistent, saline, and refreshingly clean, making the wine both contemplative and highly drinkable. Enjoyable now for its tension and purity, it has the structure and low-intervention élevage to evolve gracefully for 4–6 years, gaining more nutty, honeyed and savory nuances with time in bottle.
Production
The fruit for this Sylvaner comes from almost 50-year-old vines rooted in slightly heavier loess soils in southern Rheinhessen near Wintersheim, a terroir that naturally balances ripeness with freshness and lends a distinct mineral character. All grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection and gentle handling. After picking, the bunches are pressed directly and very slowly over twelve hours, extracting fine aromas and texture while avoiding harsh phenolics. The must is then transferred straight into used wooden barrels without prior sedimentation or clarification, allowing the native solids to play a role in building complexity. The wine matures there for almost two years on its lees, gaining depth and harmony, with only a minimal sulfur addition of around 20 mg/l just before bottling to preserve purity and stability while maintaining a natural, unadorned character.
Food & Serving
This Sylvaner is a versatile food partner that excels with subtly flavored, terroir-driven cuisine. It pairs beautifully with asparagus, light vegetable dishes, freshwater fish, poached or simply grilled white fish, and poultry such as roast chicken or turkey. It also complements classic German dishes like onion tart (Zwiebelkuchen), mild sausages, and potato-based dishes, as well as soft-ripened cheeses and fresh goat’s cheese. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its floral and mineral nuances. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes in a carafe or larger white-wine glass can help open up the aromatics, especially in the first 2–3 years after release.
Producer
Weingut Frank Beny, with winemaker Bastian Beny at the helm, is based in Wintersheim in the southern part of Rheinhessen, an area historically known for Sylvaner but long overshadowed by more fashionable varieties. The estate has become part of a new wave of growers redefining the region’s identity through low-intervention, terroir-focused wines that give traditional grapes like Sylvaner a contemporary, premium voice. By working with old vines, careful hand harvesting, and extended élevage in used wood with minimal additions, Beny produces wines that are both authentic and quietly expressive of place. This Sylvaner, only the second varietal bottling from the estate, underscores the winery’s growing reputation as a serious address for characterful, handcrafted Rheinhessen whites.
