Description

A rare 1975 dessert Riesling from Oestricher Doosberg in the Rheingau, this Wegeler (Deinhard) Eiswein-Beerenauslese combines exceptional sweetness with the vibrant acidity for which the region is renowned. Harvested almost five decades ago, it offers a fascinating opportunity to experience a mature German sweet wine with remarkable historical character.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, reflecting its long bottle maturation. Its mature bouquet is rich and expressive, with aromas of ripe peach, apricot, honey and candied citrus, complemented by subtle spicy nuances. On the palate, it is full-bodied and lusciously sweet, yet balanced by refreshing Riesling acidity. The finish is long and lingering, with notes of citrus, honey and gentle spice. At this stage, the wine should be approached as a mature bottle, with its precise condition depending on storage history and fill level. Properly cellared examples may continue to develop tertiary notes of dried fruit, caramel and spice, but this 1975 vintage is well suited to enjoyment now.

Production
Made from Riesling grapes grown in the Oestricher Doosberg vineyard in Germany’s Rheingau, the wine reflects a site known for producing richly flavoured, concentrated wines. The Eiswein-Beerenauslese designation indicates an exceptionally sweet style combining the concentration associated with Beerenauslese fruit and the distinctive character of grapes harvested under frozen conditions. The high natural sugar concentration is balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity, helping the wine mature gracefully over many years.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This luxurious sweet wine is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, apple or apricot tart, blue cheese and mature hard cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with foie gras or lightly spiced dishes. Decanting is generally unnecessary, although carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help preserve any mature sediment.

Producer
Wegeler is one of the established names of the German wine trade, with a long association with premium Rieslings from the Mosel and Rheingau. The Deinhard connection links this bottle to an important historical German wine house and reflects the tradition of selecting and ageing distinguished regional wines. As a mature Rheingau sweet wine from the celebrated 1975 vintage, it represents both the region’s classic Riesling style and the era’s enduring cellar potential.
