Walter Scott’s 2022 X Novo Vineyard Chardonnay is a vivid, mineral-driven white from Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills, crafted from fruit grown by Craig Williams, a former Joseph Phelps winemaker with a deep understanding of quality-focused viticulture. A standout release from winemaker Ken Pahlow, it combines precision, energy, and a distinctly Burgundian feel with a limited production of just 325 cases.

Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, this Chardonnay is immediately alluring, with a fragrant nose of Anjou pear, ripe peach, orange peel, citrus, white tea, vanilla, and a hint of flint. On the palate it mirrors those aromas beautifully, with citrus and stone fruit leading the way before giving rise to chamomile-like floral notes and a striking, mouthwatering mineral core. The wine feels vibrant and focused rather than heavy, with fresh acidity and a textured finish that keeps the wine moving and alive. While already highly appealing, it has the structure and balance to age gracefully over the next several years, developing greater complexity and nuance with time.

Production
The grapes come from X Novo Vineyard in Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills, a site known for its cool-climate influence and mineral expression. Fruit is harvested and sorted by hand, ensuring only the best bunches make it into the cellar. After fermentation, the wine is matured in a combination of new and used oak barrels, adding subtle complexity without masking the vineyard’s freshness and precision.
