Description
Wagner-Stempel Scharlachberg Riesling GG 2023 is a dry Riesling from Rheinhessen with peach, lemon, wet gravel and firm Scharlachberg drive in the finish. The 2023 bottling opens with yellow peach, lemon peel and a stony line that feels cut from wet gravel. Schist and quartzite sit close to the fruit here.
About the Wine
Wagner-Stempel farms this 2023 Scharlachberg Riesling GG organically, with Riesling rooted in schist and quartzite on the Scharlachberg. The site leaves a clear thumbprint in this wine: peach flesh arrives with wet gravel, and the citrus feels like lemon peel pressed against stone. At 13% alcohol and fully dry, the wine has enough body to carry the ripe apricot tone of the 2023 fruit. Wet stone and quartz-like grip sit right behind the fruit.
Ageing takes place in stainless steel or neutral large oak casks, with fruit shape and mineral grip at the centre. The cellar work feels quiet here, and the Scharlachberg identity sits in the foreground through lemon oil, apricot skin and a firm phenolic edge. Power comes through as density, with a narrow line of acidity running from the first sip to the finish. A faint salty grip remains on the gums after the peach and lemon have faded.
Tasting Notes
Peach and apricot lead the nose, followed by lemon zest and a darker wet-gravel note that feels specific to this Scharlachberg bottling. The palate is dry and compact, with ripe yellow fruit packed into a stony frame and a narrow line of acidity across the tongue. There is a gentle oily sheen to the texture, then a firm snap of lemon pith and peach kernel tightens the middle. The finish carries wet stone, apricot skin and a salty edge that keeps echoing after the fruit has faded. Drink 2025-2035.
Food Pairing
Pour Wagner-Stempel Scharlachberg Riesling GG 2023 with grilled sea bass, lemon butter and fennel for a clean match to the wine's citrus and wet-gravel line. Brown-butter scallops also make sense here, especially with a little caper and parsley to meet the wine's salty finish. For white meat, try roast chicken with thyme and pan juices or pork loin with apple and mustard cream. A regional idea is Rheinhessen Spundekäs with warm pretzels, where the wine's dry apricot and lemon pith give the cheese spread a sharper outline. Aged Comté or firm mountain cheese brings out the peach kernel note in the final sip.
Producer
Wagner-Stempel is based in Siefersheim, on the cooler western side of Rheinhessen where Daniel Wagner has built the estate around dry Riesling from stony slopes, bright acidity and a firmly savory kind of length. As a VDP estate, Wagner-Stempel treats the GG bottlings as its clearest site statements, and the 2023 Scharlachberg sits beside the better known Heerkretz and Höllberg names. This bottle is a separate study in schist and quartzite from the Bingen side of the region, with wet gravel and yellow fruit carrying the Scharlachberg name into the estate's dry Riesling range. Organic farming is part of the estate's current identity, and here the 2023 Scharlachberg feels vivid in its lemon oil and apricot skin details, with the dry line cared for from grape to final blend. The winemaking voice is quiet in a concrete way, with stainless steel or neutral large casks keeping the finish driven by dry extract, stone and a fine phenolic tug that lingers on the gums. I like Wagner-Stempel most in wines that feel carved from stone, and this GG carries that feeling through citrus peel, peach kernel and gravel long after the fruit fades from the last swallow.
