Description
Wagner-Stempel Höllberg Riesling GG 2023 is a dry Riesling from Rheinhessen's Siefersheim, with volcanic bite, peach flesh and a cool gravel line and feel. It has the weight of a serious Grosses Gewächs and the stony snap of Höllberg porphyry. Open it for a long meal, or give it cellar time.
About the Wine
The 2023 Wagner-Stempel Höllberg Riesling GG comes from the Höllberg vineyard above Siefersheim in western Rheinhessen. This is one of the estate’s key Riesling sites, shaped by porphyry, volcanic rock and pockets of loess. The fruit profile in this bottling sits in apple, peach and lemon rather than sweeter yellow fruit. The wine carries a darker mineral tone than many Rheinhessen Rieslings from limestone sites. Sustainable certification is listed for this bottle, and the 13% alcohol gives the dry GG a firm middle.
In the cellar, Wagner-Stempel ages this Riesling in large German oak Fuder and stainless steel. Partial malolactic fermentation adds a narrow creamy seam through the acidity. The Fuder element reads as breadth and grip, not as sweet oak flavour. Stainless steel keeps the lemon edge and wet-gravel detail clean. The final impression is lemon peel, pale apple skin and a dry scrape of crushed volcanic rock.
Tasting Notes
The nose opens with wet gravel, struck stone and green apple skin, then peach and lemon oil move in as the glass warms. On the palate the 2023 Höllberg Riesling GG feels broad and dry, with ripe apple flesh running through a firm line of volcanic salt and the 13% alcohol carried as mid-palate density. Large Fuder ageing shows as a rounded shoulder and faint almond skin, and the partial malolactic note gives the acidity a polished edge. The finish is long and stony, moving from peach pit to lemon peel to the clean scrape of wet porphyry that marks this Siefersheim vineyard. Drink 2025-2035.
Food Pairing
With Wagner-Stempel Höllberg Riesling GG 2023, choose seafood that has texture and a little richness such as roasted turbot with beurre blanc or grilled langoustines with lemon butter. Seared scallops with cauliflower purée will catch the wine’s peach note, then the dry volcanic edge cleans up the sweet shellfish finish. For a Rheinhessen touch, pour it with Spundekäs, warm pretzels and sliced radishes before a main course. White meat also suits the wine well, especially roast chicken with tarragon or veal cutlets with a light cream sauce. Aged Comté or mature mountain cheese brings out the almond-skin detail from the Fuder ageing.
Producer
Wagner-Stempel is anchored in Siefersheim, a Rheinhessen village of windy hills and volcanic stone west of the Rhine terraces. Daniel Wagner has made those porphyry slopes the estate’s clearest signature, especially through the Höllberg and Heerkretz vineyards. The estate treats Höllberg as a wine of depth and pressure, and this 2023 Grosses Gewächs shows that in its dark-stone grip and compact peach core. Large neutral oak is part of the house language for top Riesling, adding shape, savoury breadth and a calm frame around the fruit. Wagner-Stempel’s best bottles often feel tightly drawn when young, with their fruit tucked close to the mineral line for several years. In this bottle, the Siefersheim identity is easy to spot in the wet-gravel aroma, the porphyry-like scrape on the finish and the lemon peel that lingers after a minute in the glass.
