Description

Wagner-Stempel Siefersheim Pinot Noir 2022 is a dry Pinot Noir from Rheinhessen with dark cherry, violet, smoke and seasoned oak depth inside a firm frame. The Siefersheim fruit reads darker than many German Pinots. Used French oak adds a quiet line of baking spice. Give it air in a large glass, then watch blackberry and smoke come forward.

About the Wine
Wagner-Stempel Siefersheim Pinot Noir 2022 comes from Siefersheim in Rheinhessen, where this bottling is tied to quartzite, slate and sandy loam soils. The estate works sustainably, and the wine carries that place through blackberry skin, black cherry and a firm mineral feel. The fruit profile points to the darker side of Pinot Noir, with blackberry sitting ahead of redcurrant or raspberry. The village name matters here, and the smoky edge feels rooted in this stonier corner of Rheinhessen. At 13% alcohol, the 2022 keeps its dry red shape with a clear line of tannin. In the cellar, the wine is aged in French oak barrels that are predominantly used. The oak shows as baking spice and faint char, tucked close to the black cherry. The texture is savoury, with clove and cinnamon bark sitting around the fruit. The first pour carries a reductive shadow, then the aroma turns toward violet and blackberry after several minutes in the glass. A large glass helps the smoky note loosen before the first sip. After ten minutes in the glass, black cherry pushes through the smoky first note.

Tasting Notes
The colour is deep ruby in the glass, and the first smell is slightly closed with smoke, struck-stone reduction and black cherry waiting under the surface after the pour. Give it air in a broad glass and the wine moves toward blackberry and violet, with used French oak showing as clove, cinnamon bark and faint char around the fruit. The palate is dry and structured, carrying a dark fruit core and a Siefersheim grip that feels stony through the middle and into the back palate, with a savoury line that keeps returning after each sip. Fine tannins gather around black cherry skin, then the finish holds baking spice and a smoky note that suggests real patience for this 2022 Wagner-Stempel Pinot Noir in the cellar. Drink 2027-2037.

Food Pairing
Pour this with venison loin, juniper sauce and roasted roots; the wine’s smoke and black cherry meet the browned meat and the bitter edge of the herbs. For a regional table, choose Rheinhessen sauerbraten with red cabbage, where the sweet-sour braise picks up the wine’s dark fruit and dry spice. Duck breast with black cherry glaze, roasted parsnips and thyme also sits neatly with the 2022’s violet note and fine tannic grip. For cheese, go for aged Comté or aged Gouda rather than creamy young styles, as the nutty salt draws out the clove and cinnamon bark from the used French oak. If the bottle is opened young, roast guinea fowl with mushrooms gives the reductive smoky edge something earthy to meet on the plate.

Producer
Wagner-Stempel is a Siefersheim estate with its center of gravity in the rough western edge of Rheinhessen, a part of the region far from the broad Rhine terraces and gentle postcard slopes many drinkers picture first. Daniel Wagner has put the village on serious wine lists through site names such as Heerkretz and Höllberg, and the same place-first thinking sits behind this Siefersheim Pinot Noir in the 2022 vintage. The useful thing to know is that the estate reads its parcels through texture, and this red wine carries grip, smoke and a cool stony feel alongside its blackberry fruit and violet edge. Wagner-Stempel is associated first with Riesling from Siefersheim’s stony hills, and that makes this 2022 Pinot Noir interesting in a concrete way for anyone who already follows the producer closely today. The oak regime named on this bottle fits that patient house style, with French barrels used mainly for seasoning and a frame that keeps blackberry and black cherry fruit in focus with violet. Look for the producer’s signature in the way the wine opens slowly after a reductive first pour, then settles into spice, smoke and the dry mineral edge of Siefersheim over a long evening.
