Description

Wagner-Stempel Heerkretz Riesling GG 2023 is a dry Riesling from Rheinhessen with citrus, peach, ginger spice and stony Siefersheim drive in focused form. This is the serious side of Wagner-Stempel. The Heerkretz site gives the wine a darker mineral edge than many Rheinhessen Rieslings. It feels built for a table and a few years in the cellar.

About the Wine
The fruit for Wagner-Stempel Heerkretz Riesling GG 2023 comes from the Heerkretz slope above Siefersheim in Rheinhessen. This is a dry Riesling from red quartzite and volcanic porphyry, a soil mix that gives the wine its smoky stone note and taut grip. Wagner-Stempel farms organically, and the site sits on the western edge of the region near the Nahe border. The 2023 wine carries ripe apple and peach from the season, yet the Heerkretz signature stays dark, herbal and mineral through the core. In the cellar, the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks and large neutral oak casks. That choice keeps the lemon and green apple line clear, then adds a calm texture from the larger wood. The GG designation marks this as the estate’s dry single-site Riesling from a top classified vineyard. At 13% alcohol, it has the weight to hold the peach and ginger notes, with a dry finish that feels stony rather than soft. The large cask element reads as a faint waxy breadth and a quiet grip on the back palate.

Tasting Notes
The first scent is lemon peel, green apple and ripe peach, followed by ginger, cut grass and the smoky stone note that makes Heerkretz stand apart from softer Rheinhessen sites. The palate starts with a light spritz and a cool citrus snap, then moves into yellow apple, peach skin and a savoury herbal line. There is a firm dry core here, with 13% alcohol giving shape to the fruit and the red quartzite impression adding a gritty mineral feel. The finish is long and narrow, with ginger heat, lemon oil and a faint saltiness that lingers after the fruit fades. Drink from 2025 to 2035.

Food Pairing
This Wagner-Stempel Heerkretz Riesling GG 2023 likes dishes with clean protein, bright seasoning and a little texture. Try it with grilled trout, roasted sea bass or seared scallops with lemon butter, where the wine’s citrus oil and stony edge meet the sweetness of the fish. It also has enough dry extract for roast chicken with herbs, poached poultry with ginger broth or pork schnitzel with a sharp cucumber salad. For a regional match, pour it with Rheinhessen Spundekäs and rye pretzels, as the cheese brings out the wine’s peach and grass notes. Aged Comté or Thai green curry with prawns also pick up its ginger spice and firm mineral finish.

Producer
Daniel Wagner is the name most people connect with Wagner-Stempel today, and his work has made Siefersheim feel like a distinct wine village near the Nahe border inside western Rheinhessen after years of attention from sommeliers. The concrete trait that defines the estate is its devotion to the village’s volcanic hill country, especially Heerkretz and Höllberg, where red quartzite and porphyry shape the top dry Rieslings with a dark mineral tone. That focus matters in the glass through a salty grip, a smoke-tinged citrus line and a firm dry finish with the stern edge many drinkers now associate with Wagner-Stempel. Organic farming is part of the estate’s current identity, and the vineyard work aims for clean fruit with enough skin tension to carry long dry Riesling ferments and extended aging in bottle. In the cellar, Wagner-Stempel uses stainless steel and large old cask for the top Rieslings, and the finished wines read through citrus oil and stone with dry extract and quiet herbal detail. In this Heerkretz GG 2023, that house style lands as lemon peel, peach skin and a stony snap that feels clearly tied to Siefersheim’s red soil and high-lying slope as the glass warms slowly.
