Description
Vollereaux Champagne 1. Cru Brut is a finely crafted non‑vintage cuvée that captures the elegance and energy of Premier Cru vineyards on the southern slopes of Épernay. Blending 40% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Meunier with a precise 6 g/L dosage, it delivers both freshness and depth in the glass. Made by a sixth‑generation family estate with roots dating back to 1805, this Champagne embodies the quiet confidence of a house that truly lives and breathes its terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vollereaux 1. Cru Brut shows a bright, luminous golden hue with a fine, persistent mousse that forms a delicate crown. The nose opens with an inviting bouquet of citrus zest, ripe orchard fruits and white flowers, layered over subtle notes of fresh brioche and pastry.
On the palate, it is refined and beautifully balanced, with flavors of crisp apple, pear and white stone fruit supported by hints of lemon curd and delicate toasted nuances. A gentle chalky minerality brings focus and length, while the 6 g/L of residual sugar is perfectly integrated, giving a dry, polished finish rather than overt sweetness. The texture is creamy yet vibrant, driven by a lively acidity and a very fine perlage. As a non‑vintage Premier Cru Champagne with a strong backbone of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it will drink superbly now but also has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 3–5 years, developing more complex brioche and nutty tones.
Production
The grapes for Vollereaux Champagne 1. Cru Brut come from Premier Cru sites, including the renowned 1er Cru of Pierry, on the southern flank of Épernay in the Marne Valley. Here, vines are rooted in a classic mix of chalk and clay, providing excellent drainage, natural freshness and an underlying mineral signature in the wines. The family’s 40 hectares are tended with close attention to ripeness, and harvesting is timed precisely to capture both aromatics and acidity at their peak. In the cellar, fruit is gently pressed using a combination of traditional and modern presses, then vinified by variety and parcel before blending. After the creation of the final cuvée, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle following the méthode traditionnelle, maturing for an extended period in Vollereaux’s historic chalk cellars carved into Épernay’s limestone, which helps to refine the mousse and build complexity.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, all‑round Champagne that shines as both an aperitif and at the table. Serve it as a stylish welcome drink, or pair it with oysters, shrimp, scallops, sushi, and delicate white fish dishes, as well as light poultry, creamy risottos or soft cheeses like Brie and Chaource. Its balance of fruit, brioche and minerality also makes it an excellent partner for canapés and elegant finger foods at receptions. For optimal enjoyment, serve well‑chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass is usually enough for it to open; decanting is not necessary, but pouring into generously shaped white‑wine or tulip‑shaped Champagne glasses will help express its aromatic complexity.
Producer
Champagne Vollereaux is a deeply rooted family estate, with a history that began when the first vines were planted in 1805 in the village of Pierry in the Marne Valley. The first bottle bearing the Vollereaux name left the property in 1923 under the leadership of Victor Vollereaux, and since then six generations have shaped the house’s style and reputation. Today, Franck Vollereaux heads the domaine, while other family members remain closely involved in the vineyards and the development of wine tourism, underscoring the genuinely familial nature of the enterprise. With 40 hectares under vine—planted predominantly to Chardonnay, alongside Pinot Noir and Meunier—Vollereaux is known for Champagnes that reflect the chalk‑rich terroir of Épernay and its surrounds. Their 200‑year‑old cellars, hewn from local limestone, and a careful balance of tradition and modern technique have helped establish the house as a respected name for precise, terroir‑driven Premier Cru Champagne.
