Description
Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne Quintessence Grand Cru 2020 is a powerful, finely etched Chardonnay from one of Burgundy’s most revered white wine terroirs. Sourced from old vines in the legendary Corton-Charlemagne hill, this cuvée captures the “quintessence” of the appellation: intensity, precision, and age‑worthy structure. As a Grand Cru from the northern Côte de Beaune, it stands among the elite expressions of Chardonnay worldwide, delivering both immediate pleasure and remarkable cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Quintessence Corton-Charlemagne shows a luminous, pale gold color with silver-green highlights, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with layered aromas of ripe citrus (lemon zest, mandarin), white peach and pear, evolving into notes of acacia blossom, fresh almonds, and a distinct chalky minerality. Subtle tones of toasted hazelnut, brioche, and fine oak spice reflect its élevage in small oak barrels without overshadowing the crystalline fruit.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet incredibly precise, driven by a vibrant, saline backbone that is signature Corton-Charlemagne. The attack is pure and focused, with citrus, stone fruit, and hints of green apple, followed by complex nuances of crushed stone, smoke, and lightly roasted nuts. The texture is both creamy and tightly wound, with beautifully integrated oak and a long, persistent finish that lingers on lime zest, pastry cream, and cool limestone. This 2020 vintage has the structure and acidity for long-term aging; well-cellared bottles should evolve gracefully for 10–20 years, gaining truffle, honey, and deeper nutty complexity over time.
Production
The Chardonnay for this Grand Cru is sourced from venerable old vines, around 70 years of age, rooted in the steep slopes of Aloxe-Corton at the northern end of the Côte de Beaune. The parcels face predominantly southeast, benefiting from early morning sun and excellent drainage, with soils composed of hard limestone and marl that naturally limit yields and impart a powerful, mineral backbone. Harvesting is carried out by strict, selective hand-picking to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the press. The fruit is then gently and slowly pressed to preserve purity and finesse. Fermentation—both alcoholic and malolactic—is allowed to proceed spontaneously with native yeasts, traditionally taking place over an extended period in 228-liter French oak barrels, with a judicious proportion of new oak to provide structure and nuance without excess heaviness. The wine is aged on fine lees for many months, gaining texture and complexity, before the different barrels are blended in tank, lightly fined and filtered, and bottled according to lunar cycles to respect the natural rhythm of the wine.
Food & Serving
This Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a superb partner for refined cuisine: think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a delicate beurre blanc, turbot or sole with a light cream or Champagne sauce, and roasted chicken or guinea fowl with morel mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with rich poultry terrines, veal in white wine sauces, and aged, firm cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort, or a well-aged Gruyère. Serve ideally at 10–12 °C (50–54 °F); too cold and the complexity will be muted, too warm and the alcohol may dominate. Young bottles benefit from 45–60 minutes in a decanter to open up the aromatics and soften the structure. With greater bottle age, decant gently and briefly, mainly to separate any sediment while preserving the evolved bouquet.
Producer
Maison Vincent Girardin, based in Meursault, has built a reputation as one of Burgundy’s leading négociant-éleveurs and domain producers, particularly renowned for its white wines from the Côte de Beaune. Founded by Vincent Girardin in the late 20th century, the estate quickly became known for meticulous vineyard sourcing, low yields, and a style that balances richness with tension and terroir transparency. Over the years, a focus on sustainable and increasingly organic practices, along with a philosophy of minimal intervention in the cellar, has cemented the estate’s status among serious Burgundy collectors. Their Corton-Charlemagne bottlings, especially the Quintessence selection from old vines, are considered flagships of the range and are regularly highlighted by international critics as benchmark expressions of this storied Grand Cru hill.
