Description
Vincent Girardin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot 2022 is a classic white Burgundy from one of Chassagne’s most esteemed Premier Cru sites. Crafted entirely from Chardonnay, it captures the generous, structured style that has made Morgeot a favourite among collectors and serious white Burgundy lovers. This cuvée stands out for its combination of power and finesse, reflecting both the richness of the terroir and Girardin’s precision-driven winemaking heritage that dates back to the late 20th century.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Morgeot shows a luminous pale gold colour with green-tinged highlights, indicating both youth and freshness. The nose is expressive and layered, offering notes of ripe lemon, white peach, and pear, interwoven with acacia blossom, crushed stones, and a finely judged touch of vanilla and toasted hazelnut from élevage in oak.
On the palate, this is a structured, textural Chassagne-Montrachet: generous and mouth-filling yet held in check by a vibrant, saline-driven acidity. Flavours of citrus oil, yellow plum, and orchard fruit unfold alongside nuances of buttered brioche, almond cream, and a subtle smokiness characteristic of Morgeot’s clay-limestone soils. The finish is long and persistent, with a chalky, mineral precision that promises further complexity with time. While already approachable in its youth for its purity of fruit, the 2022 has the concentration and backbone to age gracefully for 8–12 years under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
The fruit for this Premier Cru comes from the Morgeot climat in Chassagne-Montrachet, a south- and southeast-facing hillside with a mix of clay and limestone that naturally produces powerful, structured whites. Vines are typically farmed using sustainable, low-intervention methods, with careful yield control to ensure concentration and balance. Harvest is done by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting to retain only the healthiest bunches. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is settled before fermentation, which usually takes place in French oak barrels (a portion new, the rest second- or third-fill) to add texture without overwhelming the fruit. The wine is then aged on fine lees, often with bâtonnage as appropriate, to build creaminess and complexity while preserving the tension and minerality that define top-tier Chassagne-Montrachet.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot is a superb partner for rich, refined dishes: think butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, roasted turbot, monkfish, or classic poultry such as roast chicken with morel cream sauce. It also shines alongside veal in a light jus, truffled risotto, and aged cow’s milk cheeses like Comté or Beaufort. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow both freshness and complexity to emerge. Young bottles will benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a large-bowled glass to open up the aromatics, while older vintages should be handled more gently, with a brief, careful aeration just before serving.
Producer
Maison Vincent Girardin, founded in 1980 by the eponymous winemaker, has become one of the most respected names in modern Burgundy, particularly in the Côte de Beaune. Initially focused on Meursault, the domaine expanded to include top sites in Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet, building a reputation for pure, terroir-driven whites with precision and depth. Over time, the estate embraced more sustainable and organic-leaning practices in the vineyards, with meticulous parcel selection and careful élevage that highlight the nuances of each climat. Today, Vincent Girardin wines are recognised as benchmarks for contemporary white Burgundy, frequently earning strong critical acclaim and a loyal following among sommeliers and collectors worldwide.
