Description
Vincent Gaudry Sancerre Blanc Mélodie de Vieilles Vignes Bio 2023 is a refined, old-vine expression of Sauvignon Blanc from one of Sancerre’s most thoughtful, low‑intervention producers. Crafted from organically and biodynamically farmed parcels, this cuvée captures Sancerre’s chalky elegance with impressive depth and precision. The “Mélodie de Vieilles Vignes” name pays homage to the estate’s oldest vines, some several decades old, which have long been rooted in the classic kimmeridgian and silex soils that made Sancerre famous.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Mélodie de Vieilles Vignes shows a pale, luminous straw-yellow color with green highlights, hinting at its youthful vibrancy and mineral core. Swirled, it reveals a clean, crystalline appearance that speaks to careful cellar work and a gentle touch.
The nose is pure and finely etched rather than overtly showy: expect notes of ripe lemon, grapefruit zest and white peach layered with hints of gooseberry, fresh-cut herbs and elderflower. Underneath lies a distinct Loire minerality—wet stone, chalk dust and a subtle smokiness from silex soils—adding tension and complexity. On the palate, this Sancerre is taut yet textured, with an incisive line of acidity carrying citrus, green apple and stone-fruit flavors over a compact, saline backbone. Old vines lend an extra dimension of concentration and a quietly creamy mid-palate, without ever sacrificing freshness or precision. The finish is long, mouthwatering and chalk-inflected, leaving impressions of citrus peel, fennel frond and crushed stone. Enjoyable now for its energy and clarity, it also has the structure to develop more layered, nutty and honeyed nuances over the next 4–6 years, particularly in a good cellar.
Production
The Mélodie de Vieilles Vignes is sourced from mature Sauvignon Blanc vines rooted in Sancerre’s classic limestone and flint (silex) terroirs, which naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. Working under certified organic and biodynamic principles, Vincent Gaudry harvests by hand, allowing strict selection of only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe grapes. In the cellar, the philosophy is minimal intervention: gentle pressing, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and patient élevage in a mix of stainless steel and neutral vessels to preserve purity while adding subtle texture. Sulfur is used sparingly, and the wine is bottled with the aim of expressing its origin and the nuance of old vines rather than winemaking artifice.
Food & Serving
This Sancerre is a classic partner for seafood: think oysters, shellfish platters, poached white fish, ceviche and sashimi, as well as Loire goat cheeses like Crottin de Chavignol. It also shines alongside fresh salads with citrus dressings, asparagus, grilled vegetables, sushi, and light poultry dishes with herbs. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11 °C, to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold. Decanting is not essential, but pouring it into a carafe 20–30 minutes before serving can help the wine open up its more subtle mineral and herbal nuances, especially in the first couple of years after bottling.
Producer
Based in Sury-en-Vaux in the heart of Sancerre, Vincent Gaudry is widely regarded as one of the appellation’s benchmarks for authentic, terroir-driven Sauvignon Blanc. His family has farmed these slopes for generations, but it was Vincent who progressively converted the domaine to organic and then biodynamic viticulture, becoming one of the first in Sancerre to be certified. Today his small estate is known for its meticulous vineyard work, low yields and minimalist approach in the cellar, resulting in wines that are both characterful and remarkably pure. Gaudry’s bottlings, including Mélodie de Vieilles Vignes, are prized by sommeliers and collectors for their ability to express subtle differences in soil and site, as well as for the way they age and evolve in bottle.
