Description
Vinarija Križ Plavac Mali Bio 2021 is an expressive Croatian red that captures the raw beauty of southern Dalmatia in a remarkably polished, approachable style. Made from organically grown Plavac Mali, the backbone grape of the Pelješac peninsula, it delivers impressive concentration and 15% alcohol while remaining surprisingly drinkable and finely balanced. With fruit sourced from contrasting sites in Postup and the plateau around Prizdrina, it offers a vivid, almost “panoramic” view of Pelješac in a single bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Plavac Mali shows a deep ruby core with garnet reflections, hinting at both ripeness and Mediterranean warmth. The color is dense yet bright, suggesting concentration without heaviness.
The nose opens with aromas of ripe dark cherry, plum and blackberry, supported by notes of dried herbs, Dalmatian maquis, and a gentle touch of spice. Subtle hints of dried fig, warm stone, and a whisper of coastal salinity remind you of its sun-drenched, maritime origin.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, yet unexpectedly smooth for its 15% alcohol. Juicy dark fruit is wrapped in supple, velvety tannins, giving a sense of structure and clarity rather than rustic grip. A lively, well-judged freshness keeps everything in balance, allowing the wine to feel energetic rather than heavy. The finish is long and harmonious, with fruit, spice, and mineral tones lingering together.
Although Plavac Mali traditionally benefits from extended aging, this 2021 is already remarkably accessible thanks to its soft tannins and precise structure. It will continue to evolve gracefully over the next several years, gaining complexity in bottle, but is very enjoyable in its youth.
Production
The grapes for Vinarija Križ Plavac Mali Bio 2021 come from organic vineyards on the Pelješac peninsula in southern Dalmatia, notably from the renowned slopes of Postup and the higher plateau around Prizdrina. Postup provides sun-drenched, stony, coastal parcels with poor, rocky soils that give intensely ripe, concentrated fruit, while the slightly fresher, elevated sites of Prizdrina contribute lift, aromatic nuance, and balance. The vineyards are farmed according to organic principles, with careful hand work in the vines and manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly healthy, ripe bunches are selected. In the cellar, Plavac Mali is vinified with a focus on preserving clarity and purity of fruit: gentle extraction, controlled fermentation, and thoughtful maturation (often in a combination of neutral vessels and/or older wood) allow the natural character of the grape and terroir to shine without excessive oak influence.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for robust Mediterranean dishes and grilled meats. Think slow-braised lamb or beef, Dalmatian-style pasticada, grilled steaks, sausages, or hearty stews with herbs and tomatoes. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses, aged sheep’s cheese, and richly spiced vegetable dishes such as roasted eggplant or mushrooms. Serve at 18–20°C, as recommended by the producer, to fully express its aromas and soften the alcohol. A short decant of 30–60 minutes is advisable for a young vintage like 2021, helping the wine open up, integrate its power, and show its finely tuned balance.
