Vina Pomal, Blanco Reserva 2020 White

Viña Pomal Blanco Reserva 2020 is a refined white Rioja from one of Haro’s most historic and recognisable wine estates. Combining the freshness of Rioja’s white grapes with extended maturation in oak, it offers a more layered and age-worthy expression than a typical young white wine.

Tasting Notes
Bright golden in colour, this Reserva shows an inviting bouquet of ripe pear, baked apple and citrus, complemented by subtle notes of vanilla, toast and gentle spice from its time in oak. The palate is rounded and textured, balancing creamy richness with fresh acidity and a clean, persistent finish. It is approachable now, but its structure and maturation give it the potential to develop further complexity over the next few years when carefully stored.

Production
Produced in Rioja, around the historic wine town of Haro, the wine reflects the region’s continental climate and the influence of the Ebro valley, where warm days and cooler nights help preserve freshness. The white grapes are carefully harvested and vinified with an emphasis on preserving varietal character, before being matured in 225-litre American oak barriques. This extended oak ageing gives the wine its creamy texture, integrated spice and characteristic Reserva depth.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C to allow both its freshness and oak-aged complexity to show. It is an excellent match for roasted or grilled fish, seafood in creamy sauces, roast poultry, veal and mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential, although opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving can help reveal its fuller aromatic profile.

Viña Pomal is the flagship label of Bodegas Bilbaínas, a historic Haro winery whose origins date back to 1859, when Bordeaux wine merchants established operations in Rioja after the crises of mildew and phylloxera. The estate later developed extensive underground cellars of around 3,000 square metres and was appointed a supplier to the Spanish royal household in 1925, a distinction reflecting its longstanding prestige. Since becoming part of the Codorníu group in the 1990s, Bodegas Bilbaínas has continued to combine Rioja tradition with innovation, with winemaker Mayte Calvo de la Banda guiding the estate today.
