Description
Viña Casa Silva’s Gran Terroir de Los Andes Carmenère 2024 showcases the depth and character this Chilean variety can achieve in the foothills of the Andes. Rich, polished and full-bodied, it combines generous dark fruit with sweet spice, supple tannins and a long, satisfying finish. The wine reflects Casa Silva’s long-standing expertise with Carmenère in Colchagua, one of Chile’s most renowned regions for the grape.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep, vibrant colour and an expressive, inviting nose of sweet cherries, ripe plums and figs, layered with notes of cinnamon and vanilla. On the palate, it is intense and generously fruity, with a broad, mature texture and beautifully integrated tannins. The French oak adds gentle spice and softness without overshadowing the wine’s rich fruit character, while the finish is persistent and balanced.
Approachable in its youth thanks to its ripe fruit and smooth structure, the 2024 vintage should also develop additional complexity over the next few years when stored in good conditions.
Production
The grapes come from Casa Silva’s Los Lingues vineyard, located at the foot of the Andes in Colchagua. The elevated site benefits from marked differences between day and night temperatures, while cooling mountain breezes moderate the afternoons and evenings. The grapes are hand-harvested in the second or third week of April, followed by an eight-day cold maceration at 6°C. Fermentation takes just over two weeks at 27–28°C, after which the wine remains on its skins for a further ten days to build colour and depth. Around 80% of the wine is matured in French oak barrels for 10 months, while the remainder is kept in stainless steel to preserve freshness and fruit definition.
Food & Serving
A versatile partner for richly flavoured dishes, this Carmenère works particularly well with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, barbecue, pulled pork and sausages. Its ripe fruit and spice also complement mushroom dishes, lentil-based recipes and hearty stews. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help the wine open up and further soften its aromas and tannins.
Producer
Founded in 1892, Viña Casa Silva is one of Chile’s historic family-owned wineries and has played an important role in establishing Colchagua as a leading premium wine region. The estate is particularly recognised for its work with Carmenère, as well as for its vineyards in Los Lingues, where the combination of altitude, mountain influence and pronounced diurnal variation produces wines with concentration, freshness and structure. Casa Silva’s approach combines traditional experience with careful vineyard and cellar work to express the character of each site.
