Description
Villa Bucci Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva 2021 is one of Italy’s benchmark white wines, showing just how complex and ageworthy Verdicchio can be. This is a serious, cellar‑worthy white that balances depth, minerality and finesse in a way few wines manage. Sourced from old vines and crafted in a traditional, low‑intervention style, it is a reference point for the Marche and for Verdicchio worldwide.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Villa Bucci Riserva is a luminous straw yellow with greenish reflections, deepening slightly with air. The nose is refined and layered, opening with citrus oils, quince and green plum, then moving into wild herbs, almond, fennel, chamomile and a distinct sea‑spray minerality, with a subtle honeyed note hinting at future development.
On the palate, it is intense yet poised, with a broad, silky texture cut by vibrant, saline acidity. Flavors of lemon zest, ripe pear, white peach and yellow apple are interwoven with crushed stone, bitter almond, anise and a gentle, savoury, almost smoky nuance. The finish is long, dry and very persistent, leaving a trail of citrus, herbs and almond. The 2021 has the structure and concentration to age beautifully for 10–15 years or more in a good cellar, gaining notes of honey, dried flowers and complex nuttiness while retaining its backbone.
Production
Villa Bucci’s Verdicchio Riserva comes from selected, very old Verdicchio Bianco vines rooted in the hills of Montecarotto and Maiolati Spontini in the Castelli di Jesi area. The terroir is classic Marche: rolling hills with clay‑limestone soils that naturally limit vigor and concentrate flavor, along with cooling Adriatic breezes that preserve freshness and aromatics. Yields are kept deliberately low, and grapes are hand‑harvested to ensure pristine fruit selection. Fermentation takes place in neutral vessels and large, old Slavonian oak casks, followed by extended aging on the lees in these large botti, allowing the wine to develop texture and complexity without overt oak flavor. The approach is traditional and minimally interventionist, focusing on letting Verdicchio and its site speak clearly.
Food & Serving
This Verdicchio is superb with refined seafood dishes such as grilled turbot, sea bass, scallops, lobster and shellfish pastas, as well as with risotto, especially with seafood, saffron or spring vegetables. It also shines alongside roast chicken, guinea fowl, rabbit, veal in delicate sauces, and dishes featuring truffle or porcini mushrooms. Mature hard cheeses and aged pecorino are excellent partners. Serve at 10–12°C; for full expression, especially in its youth, consider decanting for 30–45 minutes and pouring into medium‑sized white wine glasses to let the wine open and show its many layers.
Producer
Villa Bucci is a historic reference estate in the Marche and widely regarded as the master of ageworthy Verdicchio. The Bucci family has farmed these hills for generations, and under the guidance of Ampelio Bucci the winery helped redefine Verdicchio from a simple local white into one of Italy’s most serious and collectible white wines. Working with old vines, classic Castelli di Jesi terroirs and traditional large‑cask aging, Villa Bucci has earned a reputation for consistency and longevity, with its Riserva bottlings regularly cited by critics and sommeliers as among the greatest white wines of Italy and a cornerstone of the region’s identity.
