Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Vieux Château Certan shows a dense, inky ruby-purple hue that hints at its concentration and depth. The nose opens slowly but confidently, revealing layers of blackberries and dark cherries, wrapped in notes of graphite, warm embers, black truffle and a delicate floral lift of lilac and violet. On the palate, this is full-bodied, tightly woven and remarkably refined. A rich, sweet core of dark fruit is framed by fine, powdery tannins and vibrant, juicy acidity, giving the wine both plushness and definition. The texture is silky yet firm, with great purity and focus, and the finish is long, precise and poised. This is a wine built for the long haul: while it will offer pleasure in its youth after a few hours in a decanter, its structure and concentration suggest excellent aging potential over two to three decades, gradually revealing more nuance, tertiary complexity and velvety charm.

Production
Vieux Château Certan lies on the plateau of Pomerol, where gravel, clay and iron-rich subsoils create ideal conditions for Merlot and Cabernet Franc to achieve both ripeness and finesse. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work, with careful plot-by-plot management and hand-harvesting at optimal maturity to preserve purity of fruit and balance. In the cellar, the grapes from each parcel are vinified separately, allowing the team to fine-tune the final blend, and fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats to capture aromatic detail and structure. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, a significant portion of which are new, to add complexity and polish while respecting the natural character of the fruit and terroir.

The 2022 Vieux Château Certan is a superb partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or classic French preparations like veal with morels or pigeon. It also pairs beautifully with earthy components—truffle risotto, wild mushroom dishes, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show its full aromatic range. For drinking in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the wine to unwind and reveal its layers; as it matures, a shorter decant of around one hour will be sufficient to remove sediment and open the bouquet.
