Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vieux Château Certan 2018 shows a medium to deep granat-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose initially appears restrained, but with air it unfurls dramatically into layered aromas of preserved plum, blueberry compote, ripe black cherry and boysenberry, accented by Indian spices, espresso, licorice, lilac and a touch of sandalwood. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with remarkable cohesion and finesse. The tannins are ultra-fine and velvety, offering structure without any hardness, while the perfectly judged acidity supports a core of blue and black fruits that are at once rich and supremely elegant. Waves of mineral notes and exotic spices roll through the long, persistent finish, revealing more detail with every sip. Still at the beginning of its life, the 2018 has significant aging potential: allow 6–8 years from vintage to really open (around 2024–2026), and it should drink beautifully for 30 years or more, evolving additional truffle, tobacco and cedar complexity over time.

Production
Vieux Château Certan lies on the central plateau of Pomerol, on some of the appellation’s most prized terroir: a mosaic of deep clay and gravel soils that naturally favors Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc that brings lift, spice and floral nuance. Vines are carefully tended and harvested parcel by parcel, typically by hand, to ensure optimal physiological ripeness and rigorous selection of fruit. In 2018 the final blend is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. After gentle fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, the wine is aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) for around 18–22 months, allowing it to gain structure, complexity and integration while preserving the purity and precision of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This 2018 Pomerol is a superb partner for refined, richly flavored dishes: roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, beef tenderloin or ribeye, duck breast, venison, and dishes with truffle or wild mushrooms all complement its depth and texture. It also pairs beautifully with classic French cuisine such as tournedos Rossini, pigeon, or slow-braised veal cheeks. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to help the aromatics fully blossom and the structure soften. As it matures and gains tertiary complexity, a gentle 1-hour decant is usually sufficient to separate it from any sediment and allow the bouquet to open.

Vieux Château Certan is one of Pomerol’s most historic and revered estates, with origins dating back to the early 1700s, long before many of its famous neighbors. Located on the plateau close to Château Pétrus, it benefits from some of the finest terroir in the appellation and has long been considered one of Pomerol’s reference wines. Since the mid-20th century, the property has been in the hands of the Thienpont family, who are also behind several other highly regarded Right Bank estates. Meticulous vineyard work, low yields and an unrelenting focus on elegance and balance have earned Vieux Château Certan a reputation for producing some of Bordeaux’s most complex, ageworthy and consistently top-rated wines.
