Vieux Château Certan, Pomerol 2020

Vieux Château Certan 2020 is one of Pomerol’s most distinguished wines, celebrated for combining the richness of Merlot with the aromatic lift and structure of Cabernet Franc. Produced from one of the appellation’s finest gravel and clay sites, it is a powerful yet refined Bordeaux with exceptional depth, balance and long-term cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in colour, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of blackberries, ripe plums and dark cherries, complemented by violet, graphite, cedar and subtle spice. With time in the glass, more savoury and mineral nuances emerge. The palate is concentrated and polished, offering layers of dark fruit, cocoa and fine spice supported by beautifully integrated tannins. Its freshness keeps the wine energetic, while a long, mineral finish adds precision and complexity. Although already impressive, the 2020 vintage will benefit from further bottle age and should develop gracefully for 15–25 years or more under suitable cellaring conditions.

Production
Vieux Château Certan’s vineyards lie on the Pomerol plateau, where gravel, clay and iron-rich soils provide both drainage and the moisture retention needed for balanced, age-worthy wines. The estate’s carefully selected parcels are harvested by hand, with grapes sorted rigorously before fermentation. Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, followed by maturation in oak barrels, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This structured Pomerol is an excellent match for roast beef, grilled or braised lamb, venison and other richly flavoured game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom sauces and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decant for approximately 1–2 hours if drinking young; older bottles should be handled gently and decanted shortly before serving to remove any sediment.
