Description
Vietti Barolo Monvigliero 2021 is a single-cru Barolo from one of the most coveted vineyards in Verduno, crafted by one of Piemonte’s benchmark producers. This is Nebbiolo at its most perfumed and refined, combining delicacy of aroma with the depth and structure worthy of long aging. Monvigliero is often described as the “grand cru” of Verduno, and Vietti’s interpretation is among the most sought-after expressions of this elegant terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Monvigliero shows a translucent garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim—classic Nebbiolo color, emphasizing finesse over sheer density. The nose is intensely aromatic and lifted: think rose petals, violet, wild strawberry and raspberry, layered with blood orange zest, anise, white pepper, and subtle hints of dried herbs and tobacco.
On the palate, it is both precise and silky, with ultra-fine, chalky tannins and a vibrant spine of acidity. Red berries, sour cherry, and pomegranate lead the fruit profile, supported by notes of sweet spices, tea leaves, and a delicately savory, almost saline undertone that speaks clearly of Monvigliero’s hillside soils. The finish is long, linear and very pure, promising excellent development in bottle. While already beautifully expressive in its youth, this 2021 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 15–25 years under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Monvigliero lies in the northern Barolo commune of Verduno, a cooler, breezier site with predominantly white, calcareous marl that gives wines of great perfume and finesse rather than sheer power. Vietti works with carefully selected Nebbiolo vines here, many of them older, and harvests by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and pristine fruit selection. After gentle crushing, the wine typically undergoes a long, traditional maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels. Aging takes place in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and selected smaller barrels, allowing the vineyard character to shine while adding subtle texture and harmonizing the tannins before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for refined yet flavorful dishes such as truffle risotto, tajarin with butter and sage, braised veal or beef, roasted game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. It also shines alongside mushroom-based dishes and dishes featuring porcini or morels, which echo the wine’s earthy nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to open up the bouquet and soften the youthful structure; older bottles will need more gentle handling and a shorter decant.
Producer
Vietti is one of Piemonte’s most respected and pioneering estates, with roots in the village of Castiglione Falletto dating back to the late 19th century. Under the guidance of the Currado family, Vietti was among the first Barolo producers to bottle single-vineyard wines, helping to define the cru concept that now underpins the region’s reputation. Today, the winery is regarded as a reference point for traditionally styled yet impeccably precise Barolo, Barbaresco, and other Langhe wines. Vietti’s meticulous work in vineyards such as Monvigliero, Rocche di Castiglione, and Brunate has earned it a place among the top names in Piemonte, with consistently high critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors worldwide.
