Description

Vietti Barolo Monvigliero 2018 is a highly anticipated, small-production Barolo from one of Verduno’s most revered crus. This debut release from Vietti’s Monvigliero parcel marries traditional whole-cluster fermentation with the estate’s hallmark precision and finesse. Crafted in tiny quantities, it offers a rare glimpse into one of Barolo’s most elegant and aromatically expressive vineyards.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Monvigliero shows a luminous garnet core with delicate, brick-hued reflections at the rim – classic for finely made Nebbiolo. The nose is beautifully lifted and complex, opening with wild red berries, rose petals, dried mint, and white licorice, layered with hints of sweet spices and a gentle, earthy nuance. Whole-cluster fermentation adds an attractive herbal and floral dimension without ever feeling green. On the palate, the wine is both refined and structured: medium-bodied yet intense, with a silken texture wrapped around finely etched tannins. The red fruit profile leans toward wild strawberry, raspberry, and red cherry, supported by notes of dried flowers, anise, and subtle savory tones. The tannins are very fine and soft in grain but persistent, promising graceful evolution. Acidity is vibrant and well-integrated, giving the wine excellent focus and length. While already engaging in its youth with a decant, this Barolo has the structure and balance to age comfortably for 12–20 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
Monvigliero is one of Verduno’s crown jewels, a hillside cru with light-colored, loose, sandy-calcareous soils that are renowned for producing Barolo of great perfume, finesse, and detail rather than sheer power. The vineyard’s exposure and well-draining soils contribute to small, concentrated Nebbiolo berries with naturally elegant tannins and lifted aromatics. For this inaugural 2018 release, Vietti followed the traditional local practice of fermenting with a high proportion of whole clusters, using 60% intact bunches to enhance texture, aromatic complexity, and structural tension. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and vinified with a gentle, extended maceration to extract fine tannins and nuanced flavors rather than overt heaviness. The wine is then aged in oak (typically large casks) and bottle to harmonize fruit, tannin, and acidity, resulting in a Barolo that is both classically framed and quietly innovative. The final production is limited to just 3,207 bottles.

Food & Serving
This Barolo’s elegance and aromatic intensity make it an excellent partner for refined, savory dishes rather than overly heavy cuisine. Think classic Piedmontese fare like tajarin with truffle, brasato al Barolo, veal shank, or roasted game birds. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto, porcini-based dishes, aged Italian cheeses (such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Castelmagno), and lamb with herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; older bottles (10+ years) will need a gentler, shorter decant to preserve their delicate tertiary notes.

Producer
Vietti is one of Piedmont’s most respected and influential estates, with roots in the Langhe dating back to the 19th century and a modern history marked by innovation and unwavering commitment to quality. Based in Castiglione Falletto, Vietti was among the first Barolo producers to bottle single-vineyard (cru) wines, helping to define the region’s contemporary identity and highlighting the unique character of individual sites. Today, the winery is celebrated for its meticulous vineyard work, sensitive use of oak, and a style that balances depth and structure with clarity and elegance. Their Barolos are fixtures on the lists of top restaurants and in serious cellars worldwide, and this first-ever Barolo Monvigliero continues Vietti’s legacy of capturing the essence of Piedmont’s greatest terroirs in each bottle.
