Description
Vietti Barolo Cerequio 2018 is a striking single-vineyard Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most admired estates, drawn from the historic Cerequio MGA that spans the villages of La Morra and Barolo. This debut release from Vietti’s Cerequio parcel delivers both breadth and precision: a panoramic expression of site married to the estate’s trademark finesse. With only 4,925 bottles produced, it is a highly sought-after Barolo that captures the depth and nuance of one of the Langhe’s most celebrated crus.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Barolo Cerequio shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, typical of top Nebbiolo from Barolo. The nose is broad, refined and complex, opening with wild cherry and red currant, then layering in notes of rose petals, dried flowers, crushed stone, black licorice and subtle spice. Hints of tobacco leaf and underbrush emerge with air, completing a detailed and evocative bouquet.
On the palate, this Barolo is both powerful and composed, with Cerequio’s hallmark combination of richness and elegance. Juicy red and dark berry fruit is framed by savory mineral tones and a fine thread of balsamic and licorice. The tannins are firm, compact and chalky yet finely knit, giving the wine structure and length without heaviness. Fresh acidity keeps everything vibrant and poised, and the finish is long, layered and mouthcoating. While already charming with sufficient aeration, this 2018 is built to age gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining further complexity and silkier texture over time.
Production
Cerequio is a warm, amphitheater-like cru with south to southwest exposures and calcareous marl soils, known for producing Barolo of notable depth and polish. The vines sit on a mix of clay-limestone and sandstone, which contributes both structure and aromatic lift to the Nebbiolo. Grapes are hand-harvested in small crates to preserve berry integrity, with strict selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel or temperature-controlled tanks, with a lengthy maceration to extract color, aroma and fine tannin from the skins. The wine is then aged in large oak casks (and possibly a portion in smaller barrels, in line with Vietti’s usual style) for an extended period, allowing the powerful structure of Nebbiolo to integrate while retaining purity of fruit and a clear expression of Cerequio’s terroir.
Food & Serving
Vietti Barolo Cerequio 2018 is a superb partner for richly flavored dishes such as braised beef, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, roast game birds, and Piedmontese classics like brasato al Barolo or tajarin with white truffle. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and mushroom-based dishes, especially those featuring porcini. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to allow full aromatic development. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the firm tannic structure and let the bouquet unfurl; as the wine ages, a shorter decant of 30–45 minutes will generally be sufficient.
Producer
Vietti is one of Barolo’s benchmark estates, with roots in the village of Castiglione Falletto dating back to the late 19th century. The winery rose to international prominence in the mid-20th century under Alfredo Currado, a pioneer of single-vineyard Barolo bottlings and an early champion of native Piedmontese varieties. Today, Vietti is recognized as a leading voice in the region, seamlessly blending tradition and innovation across an enviable collection of crus. Their Barolo wines consistently receive top accolades from international critics and collectors, and the addition of Cerequio to their range underscores the estate’s commitment to showcasing the finest terroirs of the Langhe with precision, character and ageworthy balance.
