Description

Vietti Barbera d’Asti La Crena 2022 is a single-vineyard Barbera that shows just how refined and complex this grape can be in the right hands. Sourced from old vines in one of Asti’s most celebrated crus, it delivers impressive depth, purity of fruit and a polished, modern texture. This bottling has become a benchmark for top-tier Barbera, illustrating Vietti’s pioneering role in elevating the variety from everyday table wine to world-class status.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 La Crena is a deep, vibrant ruby-purple, almost opaque at the core with youthful violet reflections at the rim. The nose is intense and focused, with concentrated aromas of ripe red raspberries and cherries, layered with hints of vanilla, toasted bread, sweet baking spices and a subtle floral lift. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with Barbera’s hallmark bright, juicy acidity providing freshness and drive. The fruit is generous yet precise—think crushed red berries, sour cherry and a touch of plum—wrapped in finely integrated oak that adds notes of cocoa, toast and gentle spice without overshadowing the fruit. The tannins are supple and polished, giving structure without harshness, and leading into a long, persistent finish that echoes red fruit, spice and a touch of savory minerality. Enjoyable now with a brief aeration, it has the concentration and balance to develop additional complexity over the next 7–10 years.

Production
La Crena is sourced from a single south- to southwest-facing vineyard in Agliano Terme, within the Barbera d’Asti denomination in Piedmont. The site is known for its calcareous-clay soils and old Barbera vines, which naturally yield small, intensely flavored grapes. Harvesting is typically done by hand, allowing for a careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the cellar, the grapes are gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve aromatic purity and freshness, with regular pump-overs to extract color and flavor. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak—often a mix of barriques and larger casks—where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and rests on the fine lees, gaining texture, complexity and well-integrated oak character before bottling.

Food & Serving
This Barbera d’Asti La Crena pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb, grilled pork chops or game birds. It also complements truffle-infused dishes, mushroom risotto, aged cheeses (like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino) and hearty tomato-based pastas. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended in its youth to open up the nose and soften the structure.

Producer
Vietti is one of Piedmont’s most respected and influential producers, with roots in the region dating back to the late 19th century in the village of Castiglione Falletto. Over generations, the family has been instrumental in raising the global profile of Piedmontese wines, particularly Barolo and Barbera. Vietti was a pioneer in bottling single-vineyard wines and in treating Barbera with the same care and ambition as Nebbiolo, helping transform it into a serious, age-worthy variety. Today, Vietti is recognized for its meticulous vineyard work, thoughtful use of oak and a portfolio of wines that consistently rank among the finest in the region, making the estate a reference point for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
