Description
Veuve Clicquot Vintage 2002 in magnum format is a beautifully matured expression of one of Champagne’s most iconic houses. The generous 1.5L bottle slows the aging process, allowing the wine to develop added depth, harmony and complexity. This 2002 vintage, from an outstanding year in Champagne, delivers a classic Veuve Clicquot profile with extra refinement and nuance for collectors and serious Champagne lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2002 Vintage shows a luminous golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles forming a delicate, creamy mousse. On the nose, it opens with ripe, sun‑kissed apricots and pear compote, layered with floral notes and a subtle buttery, brioche-like richness from extended lees aging.
The palate is generous and front-loaded with flavor: stone fruits, baked apple, and citrus peel are wrapped in a silky, creamy texture. The Pinot Noir core gives structure and intensity, while Chardonnay brings lift and precision, and a touch of Pinot Meunier adds roundness. The mid-palate is elegant rather than powerful, with the wine’s initial opulence gently tapering into a refined, chalk-tinged finish. Thanks to the excellent 2002 vintage and the magnum format, this Champagne still has very good aging potential, continuing to gain tertiary notes of honey, toasted nuts and pastry over the coming decade if properly cellared.
Production
Sourced from prime vineyards across Champagne, Veuve Clicquot Vintage 2002 reflects the house’s emphasis on Pinot Noir and its chalk-rich terroirs. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir, 7% Pinot Meunier and 33% Chardonnay, a composition chosen to showcase both structure and finesse in this standout year. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection, then gently pressed in accordance with Champagne tradition. Primary fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled conditions to preserve fruit purity, followed by secondary fermentation in bottle and extended aging on the lees. This particular lot (5102746) was disgorged between February and March 2006, with a dosage of 9 g/L to balance the wine’s natural acidity and emphasize its generous, rounded style.
Food & Serving
This Vintage 2002 magnum is ideal for elegant dishes such as lobster or scallops in butter sauce, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roasted chicken with morel cream, or refined canapés featuring caviar, smoked salmon, or aged hard cheeses like Comté and Gruyère. Serve chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the wine’s complexity to fully express itself. For maximum enjoyment, especially from magnum, you may lightly decant it for 10–15 minutes or simply pour the first glass and give it a few minutes in the glass to open up.
Producer
Founded in 1772 and propelled to international fame under the leadership of Madame Clicquot, Veuve Clicquot is one of Champagne’s most revered houses and a pioneer of quality vintage Champagne. Based in Reims, the estate has long championed Pinot Noir as the backbone of its style, drawing on exceptional vineyards across the region. Veuve Clicquot is credited with important innovations—such as the riddling table—that helped define modern Champagne production. Its vintage releases, especially from great years like 2002, are benchmarks for richness, structure and ageworthiness in the region.
