Description

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2015 is a finely sculpted expression of prestige Champagne, marrying power, purity and precision in the house’s iconic top cuvée. Driven by a core of Pinot Noir, this vintage shows impressive energy and clarity, with fruit and minerality held in beautiful tension. Named in honor of Madame Clicquot herself, La Grande Dame represents the pinnacle of the estate’s craftsmanship and one of the most historic prestige cuvées in Champagne.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 La Grande Dame is a luminous, pale golden hue with a fine, persistent stream of tiny bubbles that speak to its finesse and careful aging on lees. The nose is bright and focused, opening with notes of ripe pear, white flowers and citrus zest, interwoven with hints of fresh mint, white pepper and a subtle chalky minerality. On the palate, this Champagne is taut and energetic, driven by its Pinot Noir backbone, yet refined and airy in texture. Juicy orchard fruit, lime and delicate stone fruit meet savory nuances and a gentle spiciness, all framed by vibrant acidity and a very clean, dry finish (dosage: 6 g/L). It is not the most opulent or layered La Grande Dame ever released, but it offers superb immediacy, purity of fruit and great drinkability without any green or harsh edges. Enjoyable now for its freshness and definition, it also has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 8–12 years, gaining more brioche, nutty and honeyed tertiary notes with cellar time.

Production
La Grande Dame 2015 is sourced from Veuve Clicquot’s historic Grand Cru vineyards in Champagne, predominantly Pinot Noir from renowned villages such as Aÿ, Verzy, Verzenay, Ambonnay, Bouzy and others, complemented by a smaller proportion of Chardonnay from top sites. These chalk-rich soils provide excellent drainage and impart the signature tension and minerality that define the cuvée. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection and integrity of the fruit at the press. Vinification follows the house’s traditional methods: gentle pressing of whole clusters, fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, and meticulous blending to achieve the precise balance Veuve Clicquot seeks in La Grande Dame. The wine is then matured for several years on its lees in the cool Champagne cellars, building texture and aromatic complexity before disgorgement (October 2021) and finishing with a carefully judged brut dosage of 6 g/L.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Champagne that pairs beautifully with refined, delicately flavored dishes. Try it alongside oysters, scallop crudo, poached turbot, fine sushi and sashimi, lobster with citrus butter, or roast chicken with morels and light cream sauces. It also complements aged hard cheeses and subtly truffled dishes, where its freshness cuts through richness without overpowering the plate. Serve well-chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to allow the aromas and texture to open. While decanting is not essential, pouring the wine into a slightly larger white wine glass, rather than a narrow flute, will showcase its complexity and aromatic detail to full effect.

Producer
Founded in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is one of Champagne’s most illustrious houses, and its modern identity was shaped by the visionary widow, Madame Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, often called ‘La Grande Dame de la Champagne’. Under her leadership in the early 19th century, the house pioneered techniques such as riddling and helped establish Champagne as a wine of global prestige. Today, Veuve Clicquot holds an important position in the region, with an extensive mosaic of vineyards—many in top Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites—and a long track record of consistent quality. La Grande Dame, created as a tribute to Madame Clicquot, stands as the estate’s flagship prestige cuvée and is widely recognized as one of Champagne’s benchmark luxury wines, celebrated for its Pinot Noir-driven elegance and ageworthiness.
