Description
Velich TO 2022 is a refined white blend from Burgenland that captures the character of the vineyards surrounding Lake Neusiedl. Named after the Hungarian word for “lake”, this cuvée is a nod to its cross‑border heritage and the unique microclimate of the region. Predominantly Chardonnay, supported by Sauvignon Blanc and Welschriesling, it has become something of a calling card for Weingut Velich, expressing both the estate’s elegant style and the depth of Burgenland’s terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Velich TO 2022 shows a bright, pale straw to light lemon hue with silvery reflections, suggesting freshness and precision. The nose is subtle yet complex: the Sauvignon Blanc lends restrained green notes—hints of fresh herbs, gooseberry and lime zest—while floral and delicately herbal tones weave through. Underneath, a stony, almost saline minerality begins to emerge, framed by Chardonnay’s gentle citrus and stone‑fruit aromas and Welschriesling’s light, orchard‑fruit lift.
On the palate, the wine is highly aromatic but beautifully composed, balancing vibrancy with textural depth. Citrus fruits—grapefruit, lemon and ripe lime—are layered with a touch of sweet exotic fruit, such as pineapple and ripe melon, giving the wine both energy and charm. A fine, linear acidity keeps everything taut and refreshing, while the subtle use of oak adds a quiet creaminess and structure without overshadowing the fruit. The mineral backbone carries through to a long, precise finish. Enjoyable now for its brightness and aromatic expression, TO 2022 also has the concentration and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 3–6 years, gaining more complexity and integration with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Velich TO 2022 come from carefully selected sites around the Neusiedlersee in Burgenland, where the interplay of lake influence, warm Pannonian air and cooler night temperatures creates ideal conditions for slow, balanced ripening. The soils in this area—often a mix of gravel, sand, loam and calcareous components—contribute both ripeness and a marked mineral character to the fruit. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection and gentle handling. In the cellar, the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Welschriesling are vinified separately, with fermentation and élevage taking place in a combination of stainless‑steel tanks and wooden barrels. This dual approach preserves the purity of fruit and freshness while adding subtle texture and complexity, resulting in a wine that is both precise and layered, with a clear expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
Velich TO 2022 is a versatile food wine that shines with refined, ingredient‑driven cuisine. It pairs beautifully with freshwater fish from the grill or pan—such as trout, pike‑perch or char—as well as shellfish, ceviche and lightly spiced Asian dishes. Poultry in lemon‑herb sauces, vegetable risottos, asparagus dishes and soft to semi‑hard cheeses (like young mountain cheese or mild goat cheese) also complement its bright acidity and subtle creaminess. Serve at 9–11°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. A brief decant of 15–20 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, can help the wine unfold its floral, herbal and mineral nuances.
