Velenosi, Ludi 2019

Velenosi Ludi 2019 is a striking Offida DOCG Rosso that combines power, elegance, and a distinctly Marche identity. First released in 1998, it has become one of the region’s benchmark reds, blending Montepulciano with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for extra depth, structure, and aromatic complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ludi shows an intense ruby-red color that gradually moves toward garnet with age. The bouquet is deep and layered, opening with ripe blackberries, blackcurrants, and cherries, then unfolding into subtle notes of liquorice, graphite, and a balsamic touch that adds lift and nuance. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and elegant, with a smooth texture, firm tannins, and impressive balance. The finish is long and fruit-driven, with enough structure to reward further cellaring; in the right conditions, it should continue to evolve beautifully over the next several years.

Production
Ludi comes from vineyard sites in Offida and Castel di Lama, at 200–250 meters above sea level, where clay and limestone soils lend both richness and finesse. The grapes are hand-harvested in mid-October, transported in small boxes, and vinified in small temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Skin maceration lasts around 28 days to maximize color, flavor, and tannin extraction, followed by 18–24 months of aging in new barriques and a further three months of rest after bottling.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled meats, game, and mature cheeses, where its structure and depth can really shine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least one hour, especially if the wine is young, to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.
