Varvaglione’s Papale Linea Oro Primitivo di Manduria is a richly styled red that showcases one of southern Italy’s most celebrated expressions of Primitivo. Sourced from old family vines near Manduria, it combines generous fruit, warmth, and depth with the heritage of a historic estate linked to the Orsini family and Pope Benedict XIII.

Tasting Notes
Deep, intense ruby in the glass, this Primitivo opens with ripe dark berries, black cherry, plum, and a hint of spice, layered with sweet oak, cocoa, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate it is full-bodied and velvety, with concentrated fruit, supple tannins, and a warm, rounded finish that reflects the sun-drenched character of Manduria. The wine is made to be enjoyed for its immediate richness, but it also has the structure and concentration to develop further over the next few years, gaining softer tannins and more complex dried-fruit and spice notes with bottle age.

Production
The grapes come from a vineyard near Manduria in Salento, an area known for its hot, dry climate, strong sunlight, and soils that help Primitivo reach full ripeness while preserving character. Harvesting is typically carried out with careful selection to ensure only healthy, fully mature fruit is used, and vinification is focused on extracting color, aroma, and richness while maintaining a smooth, balanced style.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for grilled and roasted meats, slow-braised dishes, aged cheeses, and hearty Italian fare such as lamb ragù or pasta with rich tomato-based sauces. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for about 30–60 minutes if you want to open up the wine’s aromas and soften its youthful intensity.
