First launched in 2011 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Vigne & Vini, Papale Linea Oro has since become a reference point for premium Primitivo di Manduria, uniting deep regional tradition with modern winemaking polish.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Primitivo shows a deep, almost opaque ruby-red colour with garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is generous and inviting, layered with ripe blackberries, dark cherries and plum compote, woven together with notes of sweet baking spice, vanilla, licorice and a hint of cocoa and dried herbs. On the palate, Papale Linea Oro 2021 is full-bodied and enveloping, with a velvety texture and rounded tannins. Flavours of black forest fruits, blackcurrant and cherry liqueur are backed by warm spices, a touch of tobacco and subtle oak. The wine is dry, but the natural richness of the fruit gives a sense of opulence and sweetness of flavour. The finish is long, spicy and satisfying, with a gentle warmth typical of Primitivo di Manduria. Enjoyable now for its plush fruit, it has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for another 5–8 years from vintage, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, fig and balsamic complexity.

Production
The grapes for Papale Linea Oro Primitivo 2021 are sourced from old vineyards in the Manduria area of Salento, one of Apulia’s finest terroirs for Primitivo. Here, vines grow in sun-baked clay and limestone soils, caressed by warm Mediterranean breezes and tempered by the nearby sea, which helps preserve aromatic intensity and balance in this naturally powerful grape. The Varvaglione team carefully selects and often hand-harvests the fruit, typically at optimal ripeness to capture both concentration and softness. After destemming and a controlled-temperature fermentation with extended skin contact to extract colour, flavour and supple tannins, the wine is matured in oak (often small French and/or American barrels) to add spice, vanilla and texture without overshadowing the intense fruit. The final blend is crafted to reflect both the richness of Salento and the elegance of the estate’s top tier.

Papale Linea Oro Primitivo 2021 shines alongside hearty, flavourful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roast meats such as beef, lamb or pork, richly seasoned meat stews, spicy sausages, game dishes and tomato-based ragù with pasta. It also complements mature hard cheeses and aged pecorino. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving to let the wine open up and release its full range of dark fruit and spice aromas, especially in its younger years.
