Description
Van Volxem Schonfels GG 2022 in magnum (1.5 L) is a powerful yet finely etched Saar Riesling from one of Mosel’s most exciting estates. As a VDP.Grosses Gewächs from the steep Schonfels site, it offers grand cru-level precision, depth, and age-worthiness in an impressive large-format bottle. This 2022 release is already noted for its fine herbal aromatics and juicy, fruit-driven elegance, continuing the historic reputation of the Saar for producing Rieslings of filigreed intensity and mineral finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Schonfels GG 2022 shows a pale lemon color with greenish highlights that signal its youth and vibrancy. The nose is refined and detailed, combining fine herbal and meadow notes with citrus zest, white peach, and a hint of smoky slate. Subtle floral tones and a whisper of lime peel add complexity without ever feeling heavy.
On the palate, the wine is precise, juicy, and focused, with a beautifully balanced interplay of ripe stone fruit, citrus, and Saar-typical minerality. It is technically very close to dry, yet the gentle fruit sweetness rounds the edges, giving a silky texture and great drinkability. A linear spine of acidity drives the wine through to a long, salty, almost crystalline finish. In magnum, this Schonfels GG has excellent aging potential: expect it to evolve gracefully over 10–15+ years, gaining more depth, complexity, and smoky mineral nuance while the fruit becomes more layered and honeyed.
Production
Schonfels is a steep, slate-rich Saar vineyard, where shallow, weathered Devonian slate soils and cool river-influenced mesoclimate deliver Rieslings of striking tension and minerality. Van Volxem typically harvests by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into their Grosses Gewächs bottlings, often with low yields to concentrate flavor. Fermentation is traditionally carried out with native yeasts, usually in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak (fuder), at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatics while allowing the site’s character to shine through. Extended lees contact and careful, patient cellar work add texture and complexity without masking the wine’s precision, resulting in a dry-style Saar Riesling of both power and finesse.
Food & Serving
This Schonfels GG 2022 pairs beautifully with refined dishes that echo its precision and minerality: think delicately prepared seafood (turbot, scallops, langoustine), sushi and sashimi, grilled or poached white fish with herbs, or light poultry in citrus or cream-based sauces. It also works superbly with fine vegetable cuisine, such as asparagus, fresh goat cheese salads, or dishes featuring fennel, herbs, and citrus. Serve chilled but not icy—about 9–11°C (48–52°F)—to allow the aromas to fully open. Decanting for 30–60 minutes, especially in its youth and in magnum format, can help the wine unfurl its more subtle herbal and mineral layers.
Producer
Van Volxem is a historic Saar estate with roots dating back to the 18th century, revitalized in modern times into one of Germany’s flagship Riesling producers. Located in Wiltingen on the Saar, the winery focuses on steep, old-vine vineyards and top-class sites, many of which are classified as Grosse Lage by the VDP. Van Volxem is widely credited with helping to re-establish the Saar as a leading source of dry and dry-leaning Rieslings, emphasizing low yields, meticulous handwork in the vineyards, and a terroir-first, minimally interventionist style in the cellar. Their Grosses Gewächs bottlings, such as Schonfels GG, are consistently among the most sought-after wines of the region and frequently earn high critical acclaim.
