Description
Van Volxem’s Scharzhofberger Pergentsknopp GG 2022 in magnum is a razor‑precise, dry Riesling from one of the Saar’s most revered slopes. Drawn from the upper “Höchste Pergentsknopp” parcel of the famous Scharzhofberger vineyard, it offers an even more focused, linear expression than the estate’s already celebrated Scharzhofberger GG. This is a wine of quiet power and intense citrus drive, crafted for collectors who appreciate Mosel/Saar Riesling at its most chiselled and age‑worthy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Pergentsknopp GG is pale straw with green reflections, signalling its youth and electric freshness. The nose is initially quite restrained and tightly wound, slowly revealing cool notes of lemon zest, green apple skin, crushed slate, and a faint whisper of white blossoms and herbs as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, this is fine‑boned yet steely, shooting across the tongue like a slender arrow. Bone‑dry and intensely citrus‑driven, it leans toward pure, zesty lemon and lime, with a salty, stony undercurrent that is quintessential Saar. The texture is ultra‑precise, with a long, straight, insistent finish that feels more linear and focused than the “regular” Scharzhofberger GG, swapping caress for tension and lift. The magnum format and the wine’s tightly coiled structure give it excellent aging potential: it should evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining layers of complexity while keeping its vivid backbone.
Production
The Pergentsknopp is a privileged subsection high in the legendary Scharzhofberger vineyard, perched on steep, south to south‑west facing slopes of weathered Devonian slate in the cool Saar subregion of the Mosel. The poor, stony soils and altitude yield low‑vigour vines and grapes of striking minerality and acidity. Van Volxem harvests by hand, often in multiple passes, to select only perfectly ripe Riesling berries at optimal physiological ripeness while retaining freshness. Fermentation typically occurs with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and traditional large oak fuders, at controlled temperatures that preserve purity and terroir expression. The wine is then matured on fine lees, adding texture and nuance without sacrificing the wine’s hallmark precision and dryness.
Food & Serving
This bone‑dry, laser‑focused Riesling is superb with pristine, high‑acid and delicately flavoured dishes: think oysters, sashimi, ceviche, tatar of sea bass or scallop, steamed shellfish, or simply grilled whole fish with lemon and herbs. It also shines alongside classic German and Austrian fare like schnitzel, white asparagus with hollandaise, or fresh goat’s cheese and lightly aged alpine cheeses. Serve at 9–11°C to highlight its tension and minerality; in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to help the shy nose unfurl and the structure relax. The magnum format makes it ideal for the table, evolving gracefully over the course of an evening.
Producer
Van Volxem is one of the modern standard‑bearers of the Saar, housed in a historic 19th‑century estate in Wiltingen that once supplied some of Europe’s most sought‑after Rieslings. Revitalised under Roman Niewodniczanski from the early 2000s, the estate has focused on reclaiming old, steep, slate‑rich vineyards and championing dry, terroir‑driven Rieslings of profound minerality. Today, Van Volxem is widely regarded as a leading producer in the Mosel–Saar region, consistently earning critical acclaim for its Grosses Gewächs bottlings from iconic sites such as Scharzhofberger, Gottesfuß and Altenberg. The combination of meticulous vineyard work, low yields and sensitive, low‑intervention winemaking has cemented its reputation among serious Riesling enthusiasts worldwide.
