Description

Van Volxem Riesling Sekt Brut 1900 NV is a finely crafted sparkling wine from the steep slate slopes of the Saar, a revered sub-region of Germany’s Mosel. Inspired by the elegant, dry sparkling wines enjoyed around 1900, it combines historic winemaking traditions with modern precision. This non-vintage Riesling Sekt stands out for its refined mousse, racy minerality, and gastronomic, bone-dry profile that appeals to lovers of Champagne-style complexity with a distinctly Mosel twist.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Van Volxem Riesling Sekt Brut 1900 shows a pale straw to light lemon hue, animated by fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is vibrant and expressive, with notes of green apple, Meyer lemon, white peach, and lime zest layered over crushed slate, white flowers, and a hint of brioche and almond from extended lees aging. On the palate, this Sekt is dry, taut, and focused, with a lively, mouthwatering acidity typical of Saar Riesling. Citrus and orchard fruit flavors are framed by a distinct mineral backbone and subtle autolytic tones—think fresh bread crust, hazelnut, and delicate creaminess—that add depth without weighing it down. The finish is long, clean, and saline, leaving a precise, almost chiselled impression. Enjoyable now for its energy and finesse, it also has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 3–6 years, gaining further complexity and softness in the mousse.

Production
Sourced from steep, slate-rich vineyards in the cool Saar region of the Mosel, the grapes for Van Volxem Riesling Sekt Brut 1900 benefit from excellent sun exposure by day and significant temperature drops at night, preserving acidity and aromatic intensity. The Riesling is typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to ensure healthy, concentrated fruit, then gently pressed to retain purity and delicacy. Fermentation takes place with careful temperature control, often using natural or selected yeasts to highlight the terroir’s mineral expression. The base wine is then crafted into Sekt using the traditional method (Méthode Traditionnelle), with secondary fermentation in bottle and extended lees aging to build fine bubbles, texture, and complexity before disgorgement and a restrained Brut dosage.

Food & Serving
This Riesling Sekt Brut 1900 is a versatile partner at the table, ideal with oysters, shellfish, sushi, ceviche, and delicate white fish, as well as fine charcuterie, soft goat’s cheese, and lightly spiced Asian-inspired dishes. It also shines as an aperitif, cutting through rich canapés and fried appetizers with ease. Serve well-chilled at around 6–8°C (43–46°F) in a white wine or tulip-shaped sparkling glass to fully express its aromatics and texture. Decanting is not necessary for this wine, but opening the bottle a few minutes before serving and allowing it to come very slightly off-fridge temperature will help the aromas unfold.

Producer
Van Volxem is one of the leading estates of the Saar, with roots reaching back to the 19th century when it was already counted among the region’s top producers. Revitalized in the late 20th and early 21st century, the estate has focused on reclaiming steep, historical vineyard sites and championing dry, terroir-driven Rieslings that reflect the Saar’s cool climate and slate soils. Today, Van Volxem is widely regarded as a benchmark for high-quality Saar wines, consistently earning critical acclaim for both still and sparkling Riesling. Their Sekt bottlings, such as the Riesling Sekt Brut 1900, exemplify the estate’s commitment to precision, tradition, and expressing the distinct personality of the Mosel-Saar region.

A bone-dry Riesling Sekt from Van Volxem, inspired by classic Saar sparkling wines of the 1900s. Made in the traditional method, it shows green apple, lemon zest, white peach and brioche over slate-driven minerality. Fine mousse, racy acidity and saline precision make it a gastronomic, Champagne-like expression of Mosel Riesling.
